What was the "lady in the parlor" remark about Kim Novak?

This surprises me, P. I always thought you were the epicenter of all filmic knowledge prior to 1970.

I guess I should revise my thinking to consider you the epicenter of all scholarly filmic knowledge prior to 1970. (If someone wants to hear GOSSIP about this era, then they need to come sit next to ME. big grin )

Anyway, I didn't say the whole phrase because it uses a word that has been used against women for ages. Since you asked, I'll quote it in full, albeit with the spoiler function.

I think it was either Richard Quine or Terence Young who described Novak's looks as promising her to be a "lady in the parlor and a whore in the bedroom."

Is it Norma Shearer month on Tuner Classic Movies? Must be as several of her films are being shown tonight.

Rory:

Yes.

David:

Thank you. Variations of that remark have been uttered about various women over various centuries. But now I can add it to my Filmic Rumor File.

Dear Josh,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well this holiday season.

I am writing to let you know that I borrowed this movie from the library to watch. I also installed the 1930 brain "add-on" that I knew I would need to understand and enjoy something from this time period.

I do this because I, as you might have noticed, enjoy a good many movies and radio shows from before I was born (1963), including silent era films. If I make the appropriate allowances, I think it gives the art and artists of the time their best shot at communicating to me.

I must apologize because I am saddened to admit that I've failed you. When La Norma squealed out this line:

my eyeballs rolled so far back in my head that they fell out.

And since I haven't swept the apartment floor since Montana Dave last bought a bottle of Farrah Fawcett brand shampoo,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-FARRAH-FAWCETT-SHAMPOO-For-Oily-Hair-Full-8-OZ-Bottle-/262195455912?hash=item3d0c1127a8:g:TaAAAOSwkZhWSVpf

it's taking me a while to locate them. So, I won't be able to finish watching the dvd.

Wishing you a good whatever-the-hell-you-celebrate, I remain

Yours in the Name of Kendall,

DavidinBerkeley

On page 33 of Arthur Laurents memoir "The Rest of the Story," he says

"[a]t a dinner party at the Malibu house duplicated in [the film] MILDRED PIERCE, [he] escorted the most beautiful woman [he] had ever seen - Norma Shearer,... - to her table on a deck overlooking the Pacific..."

How do you bump all these old random threads? Do you bookmark them? I can never find old threads I want to bump.

BTW, my WOW moment was discovering Simone Simon after watching Cat People for the first time a few years ago.
