I don't expect that much from the score, maybe JNH was more focused on his phenomenal Mockingjay score. Well, I guess if you don't expect that much from this score then you're chances of liking it increase...? Of course it will be nothing like and nowhere near Mockingjay Pt. 2, the films couldn't be more different and Howard being the chameleon he is I'm sure this will be an interesting antithesis follow-up to the Hunger Games finale. I love that he modulates between small-scale and large-scale projects lately -- Pawn Sacrifice, then Mockingjay Pt. 2, then Concussion, then Huntsman: Winter's War (in a rough chronology) -- it keeps each assignment fresh and unique-sounding. Stay optimistic about Concussion, ronaldbuk -- you probably won't like it as much as Mockingjay Pt. 2 (I'm sure I won't either, how could we ) but JNH is a monster and he's always got an ace up his sleeve these days. That is, unless you side with the beliefs of the "I miss the old JNH" chorus on this site, which thankfully I don't! At least Concussion is a nice lengthy release by Sony Classics and not a short release like Pawn Sacrifice (as nice of a score that ended up being).

In Variety's article about the 2016 Best Original Score Oscar nominees predictions, they wrote this about JNH's music: "James Newton Howard, a branch favorite, goes big (some might say too big) in “Concussion” For me, this sentence suggests a score that we, score afficionados will like while critics say it's manipulative, i.e. melodic. Let's hope JNH did go "too big" Interesting, because the last film Howard did with the director, Parkland, was the complete opposite, extremely subdued and low-key.

For a movie about brain injuries, it's pretty funny that the poster image does not feature that section of the head at all.

Let's hope JNH did go "too big" Grabbed this off iTunes today. I wouldn't use the term "big" for what I just heard. It is mostly quiet, minimalistic, and (naturally) somewhat depressing. But the opening and closing acts of the score have some gorgeous passages. The early parts of the opening track, in particular, has got a lovely little theme, with shades of "The Emperor's Club", and is shamefully underused in the score. "Dr. Bennet Testifies", "Bennet's Decision", and the end credits cue too follow a similar feel-good approach albeit not memorable like the opening titles. "Jacked Up" is the only action cue of the score and feels kind of misplaced, particularly since it takes a page or two from the composer's action-packed work for "Salt". But left on its own it is quite cool. Outside these, the rest of the score wasn't really for me, but I am sure those who enjoyed Parkland or Pawn Sacrifice will find this one to their liking.
