Didn't thought there would be a soundtrack release.
Anyway, a new Howard score is always welcomed by me.

I don't expect that much from the score, maybe JNH was more focused on his phenomenal Mockingjay score.
However, I'm awaiting the soundtrack release.

Track list (from Film Music Reporter):

1. Concussion
2. Dr. Bennet Testifies
3. Strzelczyk Visits Webster
4. Webster’s Autopsy
5. Jacked Up
6. The Head as a Weapon
7. Bennet and Prema
8. Strzelczyk Loses It
9. Published – Marry Me
10. We Used to Be Warriors
11. Tell the Truth
12. I Am Offended
13. Shakespeare
14. News Conference
15. Hello Little One
16. Prema Followed
17. Be At Peace
18. Bennet’s Decision
19. Concussion End Titles
20. In the Darkness – Lisbeth Scott

Actually, JNH did Mockingjay after this one. Concussion was recorded on May, where as Mockingjay was written and recorded between June and July.

Surprised by the presence of an End Titles cue (it is getting increasingly rare to see one these days, eh?). If it is as good as the one from Mockingjay, or Howard's works in general, in terms of materials covered then this cue alone could be a blind buy for me.

Well, I guess if you don't expect that much from this score then you're chances of liking it increase...? Of course it will be nothing like and nowhere near Mockingjay Pt. 2, the films couldn't be more different and Howard being the chameleon he is I'm sure this will be an interesting antithesis follow-up to the Hunger Games finale. I love that he modulates between small-scale and large-scale projects lately -- Pawn Sacrifice, then Mockingjay Pt. 2, then Concussion, then Huntsman: Winter's War (in a rough chronology) -- it keeps each assignment fresh and unique-sounding.

Stay optimistic about Concussion, ronaldbuk -- you probably won't like it as much as Mockingjay Pt. 2 (I'm sure I won't either, how could we wink) but JNH is a monster and he's always got an ace up his sleeve these days. That is, unless you side with the beliefs of the "I miss the old JNH" chorus on this site, which thankfully I don't! At least Concussion is a nice lengthy release by Sony Classics and not a short release like Pawn Sacrifice (as nice of a score that ended up being).

In Variety's article about the 2016 Best Original Score Oscar nominees, they wrote this about JNH's music:

"James Newton Howard, a branch favorite, goes big (some might say too big) in “Concussion”

For me, this sentence suggests a score that we, score afficionados will like while critics say it's manipulative, i.e. melodic.

Let's hope JNH did go "too big" smile

Interesting, because the last film Howard did with the director, Parkland, was the complete opposite, extremely subdued and low-key.

I assume since it's a movie about sports, that JNH decided to play with that instead of the psychological aspect of the film. Maybe since the movie deals with Will Smith's character trying to uncover a huge scandal within the NFL, the music treats him as some kind of hero, like Howard did with Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler (although in that case, the music was supposed to represent Lou's creepy behavior).

Besides, Parkland was a low budget film (JNH only worked a string section plus piano and trumpet solos), it was scored between After Earth and Catching Fire, and most of the cues were cowritten by Sunna Wehrmeijer and Sven Falcouner. Seems like JNH does it better when he does everything by himself (like Maleficent).

I thought the score to Parkland was excellent and highly underrated.

I think you're right, Deputy.
Maybe I won't like it as much as Mockingjay but I still believe this could be an interesting score as you already said.

And thanks for the correction, of course, it was written before his last Panem score.

For a movie about brain injuries, it's pretty funny that the poster image does not feature that section of the head at all.

Well this could be bad news...

A mere two days before the CD's release, Amazon.com (which has until now listed the item as pre-order) has now removed the item from pre-order and now lists it as "Currently Unavailable -- we don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

Apparently the mp3 album is still planned for release on Amazon this Friday the 18th (listed on Amazon) but still not seeing it on iTunes yet...

The same thing happened to the Zimmer-Balfe composed Saints & Strangers CD, also released by Sony on 4th December. It seems that it has not been released yet, at least I can't find it anywhere. Strange.

Well, looks like the release date for the CD was pushed back to February on the German Amazon store...

http://www.amazon.de/Ersch%C3%BCtternde-Wahrheit-Concussion-Howard-Newton/dp/B017NBOZJK/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1450291376&sr=1-1&keywords=james+newton+howard

But the film will be released in Germany in February, so I think this must be the reason for this development. At least, it didn't disappear completely frown

I pre-ordered this CD from Amazon.com and they just sent me a cancellation notice. It's now listed as "Currently Unavailable" with no revised release date.

Lakeshore does this all the time, i.e., identify a release date, UPC, etc. for a film score CD and then cancel it, or delay it indefinitely.

But this is kind of unusual for Sony to do.

Grabbed this off iTunes today. I wouldn't use the term "big" for what I just heard. It is mostly quiet, minimalistic, and (naturally) somewhat depressing. But the opening and closing acts of the score have some gorgeous passages. The early parts of the opening track, in particular, has got a lovely little theme, with shades of "The Emperor's Club", and is shamefully underused in the score. "Dr. Bennet Testifies", "Bennet's Decision", and the end credits cue too follow a similar feel-good approach albeit not memorable like the opening titles. "Jacked Up" is the only action cue of the score and feels kind of misplaced, particularly since it takes a page or two from the composer's action-packed work for "Salt". But left on its own it is quite cool. Outside these, the rest of the score wasn't really for me, but I am sure those who enjoyed Parkland or Pawn Sacrifice will find this one to their liking.
