Thanks for posting that film order. Interested to see how that changes my listening experience. Starting off with the Alice suite is a little too much and makes things after it seem a little bland.

Well, I kind of grit my teeth and waded through this film again just to put together an analysis of the score. Sometimes that helps me appreciate a score more (BvS, for example). Not this time.

You know how an artist doesn't want to repeat himself? Rush didn't want to make "Moving Pictures 2", Prince never produced "Purple Rain 2", etc... This is probably one of those times Elfman didn't need to do "Alice 2". It's still exquisitely crafted, but after the first couple of tracks it doesn't quite match the magic of the first. The Time themes and the Hightopp theme are OK and all, but that's it, very C-grade IMHO. Oh well, still one of the top 10 scores this year, but over all I think it was probably a well that was visited once too often...

Analysis and narrative:

(rereading this, it sounds a bit harsh, so I should probably mention that if the first Alice score had never existed then this would be instant classic, and a score like this from 95% of the other composers working today would probably be a career zenith).

I find that this score flows a lot better because the theme gets a lot more variety rather than simply the five reprises of Alice Theme we get in the original. The music has an overall stronger flow to me on this new one than the original. Plus the orchestrations are more interesting. I tried to go back to the original and found that it didn't hold up as well after this new one.

Agreed, this score is better than the first. Off to listen to it in chrono order now!

Still not getting it. This one seems to wander aimlessly. Though I admit the first score is more repetitive, it flows so much better. I guess everyone has an "Alice" score their happy with. So there's that.

Thanks, that's handy.

Just a note, Seconds comes after Watching Time. That's for when Time introduces Alice to Wilkins, etc...
