'Right now I am also involved in various degrees with the David O. Russell film called Joy.'

His third collaboration with David O. Russell. Hoping he's involved more than he was for American Hustle, though it sounds like Danny doesn't know himself how much music will make it into the film.

I thought Michael Giacchino was doing it.

I've heard whispers that Elfman is no longer attached to "Joy."

Whoops. FMR picked a bad day to report on Elfman's involvement in that case.

Is any composer truly ever "attached" to a David O. Russell project? Even Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were group efforts, right?

Elfman's name isn't in the credits of the TV spots so I think this is true.

I've seen the poster and the trailer and I'm still not sure this is a real movie. What IS this movie?

Correct. I saw the film this weekend, and Thordson and Campbell get the composer credit(s). While a bunch of other tracked in cues are credited at the end (including David Buckley pieces from The Good Wife), I didn't see Elfman's name once on the film.

In somewhat related news (and forgive me if everyone else already knows this), while Hateful Eight begins with two new cool Morricone cues, the third cue is from Exorcist II, the fourth cue is from the Thing, and overall the sparsely scored film seems to have as much tracked in Morricone (two more Thing pieces -- or possibly one Thing piece played twice) as original.

So no Oscar for EM this year, alas.

That's what an important work it was -- if you hadn't told me it had already opened, I'd not have known. That' two films now that sqeeked by like farts in the wind.

Oh, and congrats on David O. Rusell joining the ranks of Michael Mann and Barbara Streisand in replacing composers. That's five films now, with at least three confirmed rejections. If I were a composer and he called, I'd be too busy (if I knew what was good for me).

Well, five films in development, so five more victims coming up.

Joy hasn't opened -- one of the perks of having an industry-adjacent day job is getting to see some films early, especially this time of year.

Yikes -- it's going to open up Christmas day. Merry Christmas, Elfman!

Still 19 days left to replace the replacement composers.

Elfman gets name-checked in this Hollywood Reporter review. Oops.

His name was on IMDb just a few days ago. Instead of checking the film, they probably checked IMDb. The lazy man's guide to writing online articles.
