Mothersbaugh makes perfect sense as he wrote a lot of music for "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" & his playful style in general matches Paul Reubens' vision. In the liner notes for Intrada's release of Danny Elfman's "Big Top Pee-Wee," Reubens sort of hinted that Elfman might be back onboard, saying something like (and I paraphrase) "Elfman has scored all of the Pee-Wee movies, so far" and while Elfman would be my first choice - given how amazing both of his 1980s Pee-Wee scores are - I'm confident that Motherbaugh will deliver. Looking forward to the score and the movie.
This reminds me of when I talked to Cliff Martinez last year (who also scored a couple of episodes of the Playhouse show back in the day), he said Mark Mothersbaugh was the main creative force in it. He obviously had forgotten about Elfman's stamp untill I reminded him, but I think that goes to say how much of an impact Mark had too.
Personally, I wasn't even aware they were doing another Pee-Wee film, and as much as I would have loved to see Elfman return to the universe, Mothersbaugh will no doubt deliver what it requires.

At least in the U.S., the movie will premiere on Netflix streaming services. How distribution will be handled internationally, I don't know.

Thor, Danny's input was on the films and the show theme - Mark was the force behind the show's music, a bunch of songs a week every week until it went off the air. His music for the show has some impressive stamps as well.
I was reasonably impressed with the score, despite never knowing if I can "trust" that it's actually Mothersbaugh's music I'm responding to and not his orchestrator or whatever. It's more orchestral-sounding than I thought, and almost comes off as too big for the TV-movie look.
I liked this film - it's minor compared to the previous two Pee-wee movies, but very sincere and I'd say it's on par with "Pee-wee's Playhouse," at least. I also liked the score, which is indeed orchestral and far bigger-sounding than I expected. That said, as neat as the music was it lacks the Nino Rota inspiration that was so integral to Elfman's approach. I am very curious how this score will play on its own & I hope it gets a release.

Ruebens asked Elfman to score this but he was already booked.
Where did you hear this?
Elfman did an online video interview last year (I think with Huffington Post) and fans were able to submit questions. I asked about Pee Wee's Big Holiday and he said Ruebens approached him and he felt terrible having to turn it down since Ruebens gave him his career but he's completely booked until Summer.
certainly agree with everything said here. i miss the albums with a really strong, catchy theme that is then played ad nauseam. sounds insulting but really isn't. i find that to be one of the most satisfying soundtrack structures. this is a fun and easy listen from start to finish!
