Hello again!

This might sound like another in my "Caveman Asks..." series of threads, and in a way it is. But let me get to the point, slowly. My dear Big Bro', who likes soundtracks, but not in the nutty way I do, asked me (by phone) just now where I get all the good stuff I've got, 'coz you can't get that stuff in the shops anymore. You can't even get shops. And I told him that I ordered everything from a specialist store here in Spain. And he told me he'd never ordered anything on-line before. I hope you're following this - I'm sounding a bit infantile even to myself.

So, to get the bloody point, he expressed interest in starting to purchase all the good stuff from La-La Land, Intrada, the old FSMs etc, and he asked me what my opinion is on the best way of getting them, and I told him I didn't really know, but that I'd ask all you Blighty-based blighters here.

So, I'm asking. Where do you purchase your things? I think he'd prefer to get all the stuff from the same place, as I do, instead of going direct each time to the different labels. Is there a good on-line store in Britain itself which anyone would recommend? I would go on, but I think you get the point.

In short, where do you bloody Blighty-based bounders get your stuff, and why do you get it from there?

Thanking you in advance!

I used to go through Screen Archives, but now I mainly go directly through the labels.

I don't know of any UK based suppliers, but it's cheaper (and quicker) to order from the US anyway.

I don't think that there's any UK-based site for ordering CDs. When I would buy only CDs I used SAE for everything and was completely satisfied with their service.

I think that some of the CDs from "specialty labels" are listed in Amazon in the UK but I am not sure how prices compare with sourcing them from stores such as SAE.

Where do you purchase your things?

Various online sites.

Music Box Records is based in France I think, they stock most new releases, Tarantula Records is based in Germany, and have a huge selection, including a lot of older titles.
Using them is slower than ordering from the states, but it is also much cheaper with regards to postage.

Moviemusic.com would be my recommendation. It's where I buy the majority of my many, many scores.

I purchase direct from the labels although I have been fortunate to pick up some reasonably priced Intrada releases here;

Everything online for me, either direct from the labels, or Amazon or eBay.

I don't think there's much hope for the "caveman" in this modern age... Gotta move with the times.

I would suggest he'd check www.discogs.com for second hand copies from UK sellers as well as ebay and of course the aforementioned amazon.co.uk on the off chance they have it in stock.

There are lots of european stores (intermezzo, tarantula records, quartet, beat records, musicbox-records, ...), worth checking out if you're hunting down particular titles.

Thanks so far, people! I'll tell big bro' to look into your suggestions. Meanwhile, any more comments would be appreciated. For example, if you're UK-based, where would/did you get something bigger and bulkier than normal, such as the new "Lost in Space" set?

Forgot to mention Elite Soundtracks... they're based in the UK, and I've bought from them quite often.

http://elitesoundtracks.com/

They also sell on eBay under the names "elitesoundtracks" and also "guyz-n-girlz".

They have lots of the official new releases when they come out, but be aware that they also have a few "unmentionable" CDRs of their own. But all the official releases are legit.

It all depends on your Big Bro's view towards online ordering... cost, untrustworthiness, fear of the unknown, wary of items getting lost etc. Maybe he needs educating in the likes of credit card protection and Paypal guarantees etc.

I've been a Screen Archives customer for 18 years, living both in the UK and Australia before that, and their international service has always been impeccable. I don't think I've ever had a single problem. The same goes with ordering directly from the labels.

One important thing they will do is to mark packages as a gift or commercial sample and declare the value below the duty threshold on the customs label, so as to not incur any delays and import charges. The same courtesy may not be offered when buying through Amazon Marketplace sellers, whose inventory is often in the US anyway.

Is that a recent change? When I first started using SAE, I was getting packages most of the time without being stopped by customs. But later on, practically every package was getting stopped and incurring extra customs charges, so I just order "as and when" from the individual labels instead nowadays (which is probably costing me more in postage in the long-run, but I was just getting fed up with customs delays and charges as if I was being specifically targeted all the time).

Interesting. It has never happened to me for a SAE package (or Intrada, LLL, Kritzerland for that matter) in the 9 years I've lived here, and I've often had orders with 8 or more titles at once.

I've also used Elite for soundtracks where the likes of Varese, LLL etc have sold out. They even managed to get me the LLL Friday 13th box set and the Karate Kid box set last year long after they had sold out.

But normally I purchase direct with the labels. I prefer to buy on as soon as they are released so just have to cough up the delivery charge but I've never had any problem with import taxes or duties and usually the delivery time is really speedy.

Living in Reading we're "lucky" enough to have a reasonably big HMV which I occasionally use and the lottery that are charity shops. Occasionally lucky enough to get one or two decent finds.
However it's mostly Amazon, Lalaland, Intrada, SAE, and Varese etc......

Despite being in the UK, I get a lot of stuff from Amazon in France and Germany. And use Music Box a lot.

I would like to deal with all of the speciality labels directly, but it's become very expensive. The CD doubles in price if you only buy one, and I had two bulk purchases in a row that were held back for tax. You get charged almost the cost of a CD just for the privelige of being taxed, and that's before the tax itself gets added.

Screen Archives

My details are already in the site so I don't have to type debit card numbers, passwords, addresses in etc. They're always prompt to arrive.

A $30 CD is subject to tax if it gets picked up by UK customs, and that charge is roughly another $20!!!

I got caught with one of these a few weeks ago and was charged an additional £13.50ish.

A big HMV in Reading? Even the last one standing in Central London is small now.
