MONDAY, OCTOBER 5 MacGYVER---CBS reboot pilot underway based on the Richard Dean Anderson series that ran on ABC from 1985-1992. The reboot is “a reimagining of the television series of the same name, following a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.” I never cared for MacGyver, but for a decade that loves to rip the 80s, it sure does love ripping off the 80s. Watch another fan favourite get marinaded in blandness. Watch another pseudo Sam Fisher do his bland thing. Current action hero age: 25-35 Hair: shortened version of the 00s three lane black top, dark. Face: stubble or a 4 day's harvest, dark, faded. Expression: non smoker steps into smoke filled bar. Current action hero dress code: - Jacket: short, leather or pseudo denim, dark (grey or black), faded. - Shirt: T-shirt or T-shirt material with long sleeves, dark (grey or olive drab or black), faded - Trousers: denim or denim-like, dark (grey or black), faded. - Shoes: anything that enables immediat mountain climbing, dark (black), faded. Please note common denominator: dark, but most of all faded. Image: nearly no colour except for either piss yellow or turquoise, faded of course. If they really dare to bring back the vile disgusting revolting neck beard (there truly was an abomination of the 80s), they really go for a cheap easy route to recognition. If this were the godawful 00s, it might even be an attemt at "comedy", you know, like those "hilarious" "Charlie's Angels" or "Starsky & Hutch", my they were as much fun as the putrid stinker that were the 00s. Never saw a single episode of MacGYVER. Sounds like I missed out on something. Here's the pilot, if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTOHCiKizFw I watched almost all the series for a review of the episode scores here at FSM, suffice to say, I think it was season three that it got good. There was a lot of bad writing, bad acting, and some cheap scoes early on. The opening theme itself didn't become good until about season five when they synths were greatly improved and a real drumkit with possibly some real slect orchestra instruments were added. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esz47XBQZNc Then about season six it started going downhill, and then the last season was just fucking terrible. The TV movies were mediocre. The short film from a few years ago was okay at best, but it added a daughter he never had and didn't even use the show's theme. The failed "Young MacGyver" pilot, well, the less said about that the better. I have zero hopes for this new reboot. Primarily because it doesn't need rebooting, but because Hollywood has shown it can't be trusted with older property, time after time after time after time after time after time again. "MacGyver" was a uniquly 1980's thing with a slower pace and letitimate fun when here and there. This is like a genie in a bottle -- not just something you easily recapture. My fears are blands leads, revisioning in a worse way of elements of the show, some more of the radical environmentalism shoved in (some of the sries worst epsiodes centered around that), fast space (taking time away from character development and interaction), a theme only ten seconds long which may or may not have any connection to the original; and that they'll shove in Richard Dean Anderson's hate for guns into it, even if he's not in it in a different role (something RDA carried into another short-lived series he did). And that on top of all that, instead of making a fun show and fun characters, they'll instead focus on the superficial, genitalia, add a homosexual character just 'cause they think there should be one, and be chuck full of these annoying modern choreographed fight dances. And aimless, themeless, synth droning scores with twinkles here and there that could be interchangable with any other series (well, Edelman and McCarthy are still alive and making music, and I'm sure they can get William Ross back, but I wouldn't put money on any of that). Oh, and to be "cute" abd "connect" with the yesteryear audience, they'll toss a mullet onto the new MacGyver and makes stupid jokes about it.

It sort of looks like an updated version of those bad 1990's generic "EXTREME!" commercials that the Nostalgia Critic has made fun of. I totally bought the mullet on Richard Dean Anderson. This kid looks like he had that thing of weird hair forced upon him. It makes that big beautiful thing on Donald Trump's head look more buyable.
