The reboot is “a reimagining of the television series of the same name, following a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.”

I never cared for MacGyver, but for a decade that loves to rip the 80s, it sure does love ripping off the 80s.
Watch another fan favourite get marinaded in blandness.
Watch another pseudo Sam Fisher do his bland thing.
Current action hero age: 25-35
Hair: shortened version of the 00s three lane black top, dark.
Face: stubble or a 4 day's harvest, dark, faded.
Expression: non smoker steps into smoke filled bar.

Current action hero dress code:
- Jacket: short, leather or pseudo denim, dark (grey or black), faded.
- Shirt: T-shirt or T-shirt material with long sleeves, dark (grey or olive drab or black), faded
- Trousers: denim or denim-like, dark (grey or black), faded.
- Shoes: anything that enables immediat mountain climbing, dark (black), faded.

Please note common denominator: dark, but most of all faded.

Image: nearly no colour except for either piss yellow or turquoise, faded of course.

If they really dare to bring back the vile disgusting revolting neck beard (there truly was an abomination of the 80s), they really go for a cheap easy route to recognition.
If this were the godawful 00s, it might even be an attemt at "comedy", you know, like those "hilarious" "Charlie's Angels" or "Starsky & Hutch", my they were as much fun as the putrid stinker that were the 00s.

MACGYVER is HUGE here in Norway, and has been in constant syndication on various Norwegian channels since the 80s. I have a soft, nostalgic spot for the series myself, but that's about it. It's mostly a childhood/teenage thing. Regardless, I would be curious to see a contemporary take on it, in this popular "prequel" style.

I adore MacGyver - it's easily in my top 5 TV shows of all time - but it is a product of its time and ai don't think it will translate to the current era.

The show's MacGyverisms, whilst incredibly fun and inventive, were rarely ever that convincing and were accepted largely because the show didn't really take things too seriously and also because Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal was just so damn likeable. I really can't see them catching that lightening in a bottle again and really doubt they will be able to cast anyone with the same charisma as Anderson brought to the role.

And I'm willing to bet they will replace Randy Edelman's uber-catchy main theme with something dreadful.

If it gets made I'll give it a go out of curiosity but I'll be astonished if I like it.

Never saw a single episode of MacGYVER. Sounds like I missed out on something.

Here's the pilot, if you want to check it out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTOHCiKizFw

I watched almost all the series for a review of the episode scores here at FSM, suffice to say, I think it was season three that it got good. There was a lot of bad writing, bad acting, and some cheap scoes early on. The opening theme itself didn't become good until about season five when they synths were greatly improved and a real drumkit with possibly some real slect orchestra instruments were added.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esz47XBQZNc

Then about season six it started going downhill, and then the last season was just fucking terrible. The TV movies were mediocre. The short film from a few years ago was okay at best, but it added a daughter he never had and didn't even use the show's theme. The failed "Young MacGyver" pilot, well, the less said about that the better.

I have zero hopes for this new reboot. Primarily because it doesn't need rebooting, but because Hollywood has shown it can't be trusted with older property, time after time after time after time after time after time again.

"MacGyver" was a uniquly 1980's thing with a slower pace and letitimate fun when here and there. This is like a genie in a bottle -- not just something you easily recapture.

My fears are blands leads, revisioning in a worse way of elements of the show, some more of the radical environmentalism shoved in (some of the sries worst epsiodes centered around that), fast space (taking time away from character development and interaction), a theme only ten seconds long which may or may not have any connection to the original; and that they'll shove in Richard Dean Anderson's hate for guns into it, even if he's not in it in a different role (something RDA carried into another short-lived series he did). And that on top of all that, instead of making a fun show and fun characters, they'll instead focus on the superficial, genitalia, add a homosexual character just 'cause they think there should be one, and be chuck full of these annoying modern choreographed fight dances. And aimless, themeless, synth droning scores with twinkles here and there that could be interchangable with any other series (well, Edelman and McCarthy are still alive and making music, and I'm sure they can get William Ross back, but I wouldn't put money on any of that).

Oh, and to be "cute" abd "connect" with the yesteryear audience, they'll toss a mullet onto the new MacGyver and makes stupid jokes about it.

Some things just do not translate. Knight Rider came and went. This one will, too.

It's the reason they shouldn't remake movies like Point Break, The Warriors and Big Trouble in Little China. Their charm is locked into their time period like a homing missile.

Battlestar Galactica's reboot did translate because it was a very dated space opera concept (that in turn was an update of an idea Glen Larson had in the late '60s) that benefitted from being fleshed out and enhanced with CG-current visuals.

I do like "dark 'n gritty" but that formula should not be smothered over everything the same way buffoonery should not be dumped all over more serious properties like Starsky & Hutch.

God forbid they try and redo The Rockford Files...

The reason most of these reboots don't work, (regardless how stupid these film producers are) is because it's the actor that made it work. It was their personal connection with the character. How they probably took a vanilla personality as written on paper and made it unique and special. You can't replicate that. So your almost always going to have something that is lessor than the original.

I knew it would happen some day but...

No, not MacGyver.

Ah, why couldn't they just leave that big '80s hero in the era where he belongs?

...

P.S.: Where is DANIELA BIANCHI?? No Tatiana Romanova in the list?? Are you f***ing serious??!!

The real Mac was actually quite humble about his abilities - sometimes even a little embarrassed. This imitator looks very cocky, which I'm going to get sick of very quickly.

It sort of looks like an updated version of those bad 1990's generic "EXTREME!" commercials that the Nostalgia Critic has made fun of.

I totally bought the mullet on Richard Dean Anderson. This kid looks like he had that thing of weird hair forced upon him. It makes that big beautiful thing on Donald Trump's head look more buyable.

I've never seen an episode of the original series, but this reboot thing just looks awful. Who the hell is the hipster douchebag they've got as the lead? Why not cast, um, I dunno, A GROWN UP? AN ADULT?

This looks worse than anything produced by Shonda Rhimes, and that is saying a lot smile

Regarding the new MacGyver- I actually thought it was that actor playing Lex Luther, playing the Joker from BvS movie.
