Wow. This could win him his second Oscar (for which he is definitely overdue), or at least net him a fresh nomination.

Very cool and inspired choice. I'm excited to see what he delivers.

I love the rare Hollywood movie that actually surprises us with its composer choice. How f'ing rare is THAT!?

Really looking forward to this film and that's an interesting choice of composer. Can't wait to hear the score.

Very cool composer casting!

The famous Norwegian actor Kristoffer Joner has his big international breakthrough in this film, so that's another thing I look forward to -- in addition to the film itself, of course.

I used to be a big fan of Sakamato's scores, but I lost track of him for years (also because he didn't have many new assignments for a long period of time).

Yet I'm very interested to hear what he will bring to the table! The movie has a very high potential to be mind-blowing (again a great trailer!), so the material to work with should be inspiring for him. Though I suspect the naturalist style of the movie will dictate the use of only a limited amount of music.

Great news! His musical voice has long since been missing. Though I've warmed to Gustavo after his beautiful and resonant work in the video game The Last of Us, Sakamoto is very deserving of this!

UPDATE: Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner joined as composers.

The National's Bryce Dessner composing soundtrack for Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant".

Indie rocker turned composer joins Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto to score Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest epic.

Dessner will participate in what might be his most high-profile gig as composer: He’s contributing to the score for The Revenant, the forthcoming Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller from Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Dessner, along with German electronic artist Carsten Nicolai, aka Alva Noto, will be joining Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto on the project.

Sakamoto previously won an Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on "The Last Emperor," and Noto is his longtime collaborator. Bryce Dessner is also set to provide original score.

"I am thrilled to finally be working with Ryuichi,” Iñárritu stated, adding, “He is an incredibly unique talent and I have been a big admirer of his work for years." Sakamoto said, "I've been given the opportunity to work with perhaps the most influential director right now. I couldn't be more honored."

More info:

"Following the success of 2014’s Birdman (Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director), director Alejandro G. Iñárritu pushes the limits of film making with the survival epic The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) and shot in the frozen Canadian wilderness with only natural lighting, The Revenant is a story of loss, revenge and resilience in the face of impossible odds against the furies of man and nature itself. The film is heavily favored to be a critical darling as awards season gets under way. Director Iñárritu has chosen to forgo almost all dialogue in favor of a gorgeous soundscape and a sweeping score. A film of this magnitude deserves a composer who understands creative artistry and unbridled passion. Japanese master and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor) fits the bill perfectly. Along with fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra member and frequent collaborator Alva Noto, Sakamoto has created a gripping soundtrack that is sure to be a treat for the winter crowds. Bryce Dessner (writer for Kronos Quartet and the LA Phil) also supplies additional music."

"The score was performed by the Berlin-based collective/25-piece orchestra s t a r g a z e."

Also this is from people who have seen the film and heard the score:

"The score of The Revenant is exceptional... but may be too much not-new music to qualify".

"The Revenant is very Malick with minimal dialogue, dreamy voiceovers, and stunning Lubezki visuals plus Sakamoto score. Actors superb."

I hope this isn't another Fantastic Four deal, where they bring in a legendary composer to do the theme so that they can slap his name on the cover, while farming the bulk of the score proper out to other composers.

Are we supposed to want to buy this album after hearing that sample?

I like it. Dreamy, dark, moody. A bit "There will be blood"-Jonny Greenwood-like?
