...

If it weren't for the rich period detail and the humanized Kong Jackson's film would have nothing to recommend it.

Hey, you forgot JNH's score!

IMHO of course. smile

As far as a CGI recreation of a real ape, Jackson's version is breathtaking. But yeah, I always saw KK as a monster not a supersized animal. That's what made him so special.

Heh-heh... he's gonna need to be a lot MORE supersized if he's gonna square off against Goji.
I don't think such a film would actually come to pass, though.

that's why there needs to be an Alien vs. Godzilla film. Alien infects him, we get a Godzilla-sized alien, he goes to Skull Island, infects Kong, but we get a Godzilla-sized Kong alien (the alien isnt going to downsize). Both aliens still have traits of the original species.
And it almost makes sense!

Probably makes more sense than what ever they end up doing! Get an agent and send it in.

Anyway, as to the PROMETHEUS sequel.... Well, I guess it's really going to happen though it appears it won't be PROMETHEUS 2 after all, but an ALIEN movie. How anyone can look forward to this, I just can't understand.

That kind of thinking is clearly above your pay grade.

I wish I were getting payed to think about it -- because I think I could come up with better crap than PROMETHEUS. And as for going to see a sequel to it.... they'll have to pay me. ALIEN whatever the hell it's going to be called is an instant "wait for cable" watching movie for me.

I watched some of it not long ago on satellite in HD and I was struck with how fast its CGI is looking dated. I don't see Jackson's sappy homage to the '33 original as anything that's going to be well-remembered by the time the original has its 100th anniversary.

I'm thinking of bigger things: "Alien vs. Bladerunner" but with some time travel and the confirmation that Decker is an android. If we can get the Harlan Ellison estate AND James Cameron to sue for plagiarism, we got a winner!
Here's what The Suits think:

Funny, I never thought of Kong as a monster, even as a kid seeing it for the first time.
He was an animal--with a normal animal existence like any other.
The Skull Island legend described him as a god, when really he was just big-boned! big grin
He was not the product of the atom age or diabolical medical experiments or any other monster cliche that was to become so prevalent in the coming years--like Godzilla or the giant ants of "Them", etc.

I would describe the film as a monster movie in only the most superficial sense. I tend to think of it more as an adventure/action/fantasy film--an amazing one at that.

A question: If you guys gave him monster-status based on his size, does that mean that Mighty Joe Young was a monster too?

I always saw Kong as a freak of nature. He's probably from the "ape family", but obviously there was some kind of natural mutation.

No, Mighty Joe Young was a huge gorilla, though in reality there's never been a gorilla that large. There once was a giant ape though, but he was more like a large orangutan. He was called Gigantopithecus, and they should make a movie where one of them is found still alive. In fact, from the trailer to the new live-action (though with a ton of CGI) JUNGLE BOOK from Disney, looks like King Louis is going to be one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigantopithecus

Just found this info at Wikipedia:

"Christopher Walken will play King Louie in the 2016 Disney live-action film The Jungle Book. He will be portrayed as a Gigantopithecus, an extinct species of great ape, as orangutans themselves are not native to India. In the trailer, Louie is seen ferociously chasing Mowgli as the man cub attempts to escape from his temple."

Depending on how deeply one wants to immerse into the fiction, for discussion's sake it's worth pointing out that in both the 1933 & 2005 it's a given that Skull Island is home to prehistoric animals, cut off from millions of years of evolution. That would include primates.

Well, to be fair, I'm sure every day Christopher Walken wakes up he thinks he's a Gigantopithecus.

;-)

It's the part he was born to play!
Bet you anything the animators rotoscope his actual dance moves.
