As you get older the days seem to pass by more quickly, and things you should remember get temporarily forgotten and passed over in the rush of new things to occupy your mind.

So it is that most years I temporarily forget Ron's birthday in my rush to keep up with other thoughts.

For a change, this year I haven't forgotten the personal importance of September 2, and so I am sending Ron my very best wishes on his Birthday.

In about one month, Ron will have been on the FSM Discussion Board for 15 years! I've been about 12 or so now, but he must be one of the longest here of anyone. In those years he's seen a lot of things go on around here---amazing releases we never thought would happen, fights and squabbles, insane hackers and trollers, and the deaths of many of our favorites, not only composers but fellow FSM-ers, too. Even filmmusic history can be exciting, momentous, or touching in its various ways.

In Ron's years here I have enjoyed his writing style, his thoughtful comments, and his terrific knowledge about filmmusic and I never miss a Ron Pulliam post. Although I realize he doesn't post as much as he used to, his continuing presence here and the classiness of his presentations is a real asset to this Forum, and I, for one, am grateful that I can look forward to seeing something he has written at least once-in-awhile.

So, RON PULLIAM old friend, this message gives Manderley a chance to wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY today.....and a host of merry un-Birthdays starting tomorrow!!!

Happy to chime in here with happy birthday wishes. I was lurking on this board for many years before contributing, and both Ron and Manderley came to be associated with that Ernst Lubitsch joie de vivre that is so rare and fine these days. I've always enjoyed and more important learned from the posts of Ron (and the big M), and am grateful for getting to know a bit of you both on here.

Happy day!

Happy birthday Ron!

But since this is this side of the board and not the other bit, we ought to mention film music. So I've invented a game. We all suggest a film score which we think Ron might like. Ron comes back and says he likes it or he doesn't like it. The winner is the one who doesn't die, and you die by mentioning a title that Ron doesn't like.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... ALL FALL DOWN (Alex North)

A belated greeting to Ron.

Suggested score he'd like - Hurry Sundown (Hugo Montenegro)

That's two of us still alive until Ron comes back with the bad news. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife here.

Here it is one week later.

Sigh.

Last week was NOT a good one for internet surfing. It was a week-long jury pool endurance challenge where two separate jury pools were combined into one and then slowly sifted through for a jury panel with three alternates.

With 90 people in the pool, about 12 of us were left uncalled after three days of monotonous droning from the attorneys asking the same questions of mostly disinterested and disingenous potential jurors.

I am free for another year. I took Friday off and vegetated the next four days.

And now I find this lovely thread with mostly lovely comments (Mr. Marshal, you were very wise!).

Thank you, Manderley, and everyone else who posted.

It was my 67th birthday. I was taken to lunch by my co-workers during our 2-hour jury pool break. Saturday, a friend took me to brunth at Brenda's Soul Food Cafe in San Francisco.

There I ate eggs benedict with creole hollandaise sauce over fried chicken on cream biscuits and a bowl of cheddar grits! Three cups of chicory coffee washed it all down. I later had beignets for dessert.

A mighty fine end to a birthday week fraught with the stresses of jury selection (for what will be a six-to-eight weeks trial).

While I was dining, Alex North's pensive theme for "The Long, Hot Summer" went through my mind!

How did I miss this thread when it started?! MANY HAPPY RETURNS, big guy! And remember Uncle PJ's advice for birthdays: don't confine it to just a day, but stretch it out into a season, and keep celebrating. (And if you do, then my well-wish will not be belated after all -- but that's not why I'm recommending this valid philosophy...)

Cheers,

P.
