Glad I'm not the only one who's seen it, Greg.

You chose a good word to describe Craven's contribution to "Pilgrim Soul." In interviews and in person, Mr.C. impressed me as a very sensitive, gentle soul for some reason. Maybe it was his thoughts, maybe something about his gaze.

Craven seemed like a genial guy, and I always appreciated his intelligent discussions about--and defense of--the genre.

I would like to think he had as much fun playing himself in 'New Nightmare,' shepherding Langenkamp through her final confrontation with Freddy, as I did watching him.

He'll be missed.

I have a big, weird soft spot for "Deadly Friend." Every boy needs his BB, especially if she looks like Kristy Swanson. Quaint, ghoulish, and strangely affecting...and with the haunting Bernstein synths that are so awesomely eighties.

I remember reading an issue of Cinefantastique back in 1996 where Craven revealed SCREAM would be scored by this "Marco Beltrami" guy. I remember thinking "who?" Well, I think that choice proved Craven had good taste in music, with an emphasis on memorable themes.

One story is that Marco Beltrami landed the job after Craven's assistant was on an Internet chat site, asking if anyone knew of any fresh musical talent.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, an exploration into the world of voodoo and zombification. Not simply a horror movie, it could also be interpreted as an allegory for the repressive regime of 'Pap Doc' Duvalier and his subjugation of the citizens of Haiti. For my tastes, Craven was firing on all cylinders for this one. Unsettling and creepy in the extreme, with fantastic production design, nightmarish imagery, and a truly terrifying performance by the late Zakes Mokae.

I'd need to revisit it as I saw it a long time ago and to be honest found the voodoo material not that scary. It's funny how voodoo pops up in many tv shows and movies around that period, hollywood apparently had a fixation with the Haitian voodoo in 80s that somehow got stripped down to household curses in the 90s. There is now a barebones blu-ray released for Serpent in the UK, but apparently shout factory has a special edition in the works so I'll wait for that to get out (and hopefully it will contain a nice tribute to Craven as well).

Just playing the Perseverance issue of DEADLY FRIEND now and I'd forgotten how lovely some of it is.
A great orchestra/synth combo.
Some parts reminding me of CUJO, my absolute fave score by CB.
Although it's a somewhat troubled film, I have fond memories of it, even though I haven't watched it for many years. I must remedy that quick-smart!
Has there ever been a more gorgeous dead person than Kristy Swanson? smile

I remembered Mr Craven by watching one of his obsceurer movies every night during last week
Monday : Deadly friend
Tuesday: Hills Have Eyes 2 (1984)
Wenday: Vampire in Brooklyn
Thuday : Invitation to hell
Friday : New Nightmare
Satday : Swampthing
Sunday : Scream TV series (EP 9-10)

I didnĀ“t know he had cancer, and it came as a shock learning of his passing.
