Just out of curiosity -- are there any directors, writers, actors, composers, cinematographers, anyone whose work you like so much you'll see any movie they're involved with? Or for collectors, anyone whose complete collections you own?

There are no stars that can get me to the movies just to see them, and really, since Jerry Goldsmith died, there's no one behind the scenes that can get me into a theatre -- no one. I pretty much look at the film industry today to be completely in the hands of hacks.

As a youngster I did my best to see all films by certain actors ... Michael Caine, Clint Eastwood, Roger Moore and a handful of others. But after seeing dire films I realised that the star doesn't always make the movie.

I can't say any particular director drew me to the cinema ... and several would keep me away unless there was another good reason to pay.

I was a regular cinema-goer in my youth but the combination of the awful multi-plexes, reduced comfort, cattle mentality ... and adult responsibilities, etc. curbed my enthusiasm until only one name drew me from my TV lounge .... to pay and watch ...

... and after the last (poor) one I won't be doing that this year.

I have fond memories of numerous wonderful films and I still enjoy watching, always hoping to find another film I can rate 5 or more on IMDb, but I'm no longer the dedicated film fan of my youth.

Since Jaws I have yet to wait on a Spielberg movie to come to BD/video before seeing it. I've seen all of his films in the theatre .

Gotta say that you are right, and you are the fan I wish that I was.
My film fan hobby has rather taken a step back to other things in recent years, but Spielberg deserves every accolade, he knows what his movie is about in every case, and even in his "missteps' there is something fantastic taking place, and all along there are signposts of a film maker who cares about what he is doing, and who is brilliantly talented as a director.

Currently there are several directors whose new films are must-sees for me, despite any possible bad reviews and lousy word-of-mouth:

Terrence Malick
the Coen brothers
Wes Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson
Cameron Crowe
Peter Bogdanovich
Paolo Sorrentino
Noah Baumbach
Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Whit Stillman
Alexander Payne

Ennio Morricone, if his name appeared on the poster advertising the next film appearing at my local cinema, I'd go and watch it.

It wouldn't matter to me whether the film was good, bad or downright ugly, I was there for the music.

I was lucky enough to see some great movies like The Red Tent, The Burglars and Winged Devils.

Great films, wonderful music, happy days.

diffrent eras really. back then, 70s, yes. when there really were directors worth crossing the road for. and when there were so few soundtracks available, i sat in cinemas recording the music.

id go hell and high water - even to mad late night showings, just to catch a movie id not seen by proper talent.
peckinpah.
leone.
don siegel
Ralph Nelson
david lean

later Scorcese.
and like Chris, anything with morricone on the poster.
went to see Massacre in Rome and The Night Caller (Fear on the city). coz i read Ennio did it.
happy days, indeed. when stuff was harder to find, you had no choice.

these days, theres no one. ive been to the cinema 3 times in the last year, havent bought a dvd in ages.

Yes, I have seen pretty much everything by Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Tim Burton, Michelangelo Antonioni, David Lynch, David Fincher etc. -- some of my favourite directors.

In terms of actors, I have seen everything there is of Jack Nicholson, and aim to do the same with Anthony Hopkins, Ian Holm and a few others.

For composers, I've seen everything that is available in some format by John Williams, Danny Elfman and Elliot Goldenthal. I also have as complete a collection of these as humanly possible.

It's a natural thing -- once you find your favourites, you want to explore everything they've done, even the old and creaky stuff or the misfires.

No.

Well...maybe the Coen Bros. But, basically everyone involved needs to bring it. My time is not unlimited.

Use to try to see movies scored by Bernstein and Goldsmith.

I usually go to Spielberg movies, and I have certain directors I like like David Fincher and Ridley Scott, but their subjects must interest me.

In my youth, I'd see any movie staring Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.

No. My top ten favorite films are by 10 different directors. I often only like an actor in one role or performance.

No one. I still see lots of movies, and I don't think the industry is "in the hands of hacks" but these days even Spielberg can't get me into the theater every time. I haven't even seen Spielberg's last few films. I tried War Horse and made it halfway through, and haven't even tried Lincoln frown

There just isn't enough time for me to see everything I might be mildly interested in.
