Man, almost 2 years since you wrote this and I don't think anyone has made a move to release it in the states. Thankfully, I have a region hacked BD player and can watch it. But jeez. I'm one of those people who loves the second year as much as the first, just on a different level.

I just looked at Amazon and not only is it Region B, it's currently $150. For one season of the show. Jesus.

Amazon.com have the second season for $48.03.

Doesnt bode well for Region 1 blu of UFO. This region nonsense sucks - what's the point when noone will release something in your own region? Who is it helping?

Word has it Madmen Entertainment Australia have plans to release UFO, but no date yet.

That's good for Region 4, but you'd think there was still a market for it in Region 1.

By the way, since the discussion is currently about regions and what discs will play, can anyone tell me how, by just looking at a Blu-Ray or DVD disc and/or cover, what region it was made for? Thanks.

Region marks are on the package labeling, and sometimes the discs themselves. DVD regions are numbers ("0" is regionless, which will play anywhere), and letters are Blu-ray. I don't know if there's any common logo for the region codes—I've seen stylized world globes, circles, a hexagon with a circle in it, etc.

I think the original purpose of region codes was to control when and where a title could be played. (A movie might open in one country first, and others some weeks later.) Now that many movies are released simultaneously in cinema, streaming, and physical home media, region coding seems kinda silly.

I've bought region-free players in the past, but now rip everything into the media center computer. Many titles I will watch a few times, then donate them to the local library. I can always sign them out later if I want to see it again. The only media I can't donate are those from other regions. (Many home users wouldn't have a clue why a disc wasn't playing.)

Thanks for the info, Metryq. I have just one Blu-Ray disc which won't play on my machine. When I put it in, it just comes up with a picture of a B/R disc with a red circle and line through it. Also tried it on my sister's player: same thing.

It says on the disc's label "US R Canada 14A". So, am I to assume it should play on my player? (I live in California, USA.) I'm very confused as to why this one title won't play....

EDIT: I also exchanged the disc at the store I bought it from, for the same title. Same thing again.

Those are the film's rating. Rated R in USA. Canada rated it 14A (similar to R). So you're still out of luck in terms of telling the region. You dont have the disc case with sleeve art? Maybe your blu-ray players are set up with a child-lock to not play R Rated flicks.

Thanks for the response.

Ahh. I thought that meant "US Region/Canada A". Shows you what I know.

In regards to your question, the case also has very small writing on it that I cannot read without a magnifying glass (which I don't have). Curse it! And curse my eyes. frown

Can you find the same copy online and post a link here? Blu-ray review sites (bluray.com) are sometimes very detailed.

The site you mentioned, bluray.com, says the movie ("THX 1138") on Blu-Ray is Region Free. Oh well, I'll just chalk it up to a small loss; it only cost $6.99 at the store I got it from. Must be my player not being compatible with that particular disc or something....

I was going to guess that the player had a parental lock on it. But perhaps the US/Canada A is the region of the player? (US is region A for Blu-ray, region 1 for DVD.) More than once I've had allegedly "region-free" discs turn out to be European, or from elsewhere—that is, not actually region-free.

That's just one of the many reasons I started ripping everything into the media center computer, even for single-play titles from Netflix or the library. I also got tired of having to sit through unskippable previews and other ads (like the mandatory "Blu-ray is so much better" ads on every DVD). Rented or borrowed discs surprised me often enough—right in the middle of the movie and dinner—by skipping or freezing. The disc might be visibly perfect, but something is obviously wrong with it when it freezes at the same spot on several players.

So that's basically the last resort. Try the disc on other players, if possible, and see what happens. Maybe try playing it in a store with knowledgeable staff who will recognize the error code.

EDIT: If you have an older player, see if there is a firmware update from the manufacturer's site. That's sometimes the reason for incompatibility.
