Why the negativity?

I care, but I don't see much reason to chime in about it. I'll talk about the score once I've heard it. The release date isn't that important to me.

Banos, for me, is the next Desplat. I care.

Yea, Banos rocks. Release dates are also not terribly important to me, hence no response.

First review isn't so hot, but the mention of "over-dramatic music" might well mean WE are in for a delight!

So far sounds like his first decent score since he moved to US.

Dude. What!?!? Evil Dead is fantastic and Oldboy has at least fifteen minutes of fantastic material. "Revenge" and "Destiny" alone are worth the price of admission on that one...

Well... fantastic not really... just atmospheric stuff for an hour and then 10 minutes of his usual action music... Can't really get all the praise that one gets... since it's so far behind his earlier Spanish scores in the same genre.

And I am not the only one...

"Oldboy"- you mean Spike Lee's atrocity exhibition? I wouldn't put one penny toward that horrid lazy -ass shit. Min Sik Choi should have come over here and kicked Spike Lee's ass for that shitpiece waste of film. You do not re-make the original "Oldboy" it is untouchable. ..and 15 min of music makes for a happy purchase? Yikes! You are ez to plz.

You must have missed his 1999 effort "Goya in Bordeaux". It's literally Evil Dead 1.0.

I guess I should point out, also, that I rarely listen to complete scores. I make my own suites of favorite material ranging from 10 and 20 minutes usually (or multiple suites or 'movements' for huge epics, like Conan or Krull or Ben-Hur etc.). Both Evil Dead and Oldboy have fantastic 15 minutes suites that I listen to regularly, discarding the material I don't want and keeping the stuff I love.

I just got done listening to this for the first time. Well done but no new ground for Banos here, unfortunately, and not a fantastic listen overall.

The end title builds to a beautifully rich string elegy, replete with the layering of agonized contrapuntal strings I've come to consider his trademark in recent years.

He does use a metronome in a few suspense cues, very cool and inventive given the nature of the film's subject matter. There's also a low menacing contrabassoon in a few cues, another nice old-school touch.

Largely though, we're talking about wandering mysterioso piano passages with whispering suspenseful strings, that occasionally rise into moments of dissonance or outright horror. But it's mostly ground he covered in the understated portions of EVIL DEAD and INTRUDERS, without as much enthusiasm.

Last track is great. "Meh" for the rest mostly. Have I lost faith in Banos? Not in the least. Doesn't sound like the movie was exactly a goldmine of inspiration given the reviews I've read thus far and with some of the projects he has on the horizon, well, I have a feeling we're only just beginning to see this composer's gifts emerging.

I have a feeling that this score, like the film, will be small peanuts in some very large careers for many of those involved. But still, there's about ten minutes worth of really good stuff and that end title is really lovely!

that's disappointing...

hopefully at least his Ron Howard score will be good for a change...

By all means give it a listen and decide for yourself, but from what you've told me about your preference toward his work I think only the last track and maybe sporadic moments in between will be your cup of tea.

I'm not disappointed personally - I really do believe his best is still to come!
