FSM Message can only have a strong influence on the weak-minded...

none, this board has no influence.

It's a commercial decision not a philantrophic one.

A body of work (that may or may not have been released previously) is more than often re-issued under these conditions:
- The master tapes have been pulled from storage and require (re-)baking to extend shelf/storage life. Often this would be the ideal moment to absorb these costs into a new release, possibly expanded and remastered
- The master analogue tapes require conversion or storage on digital media to preserve the body of work. Again a new release would absorb the costs
- The contract conditions (orchestra, musicians, studio, producer) have expired or changed allowing a new (expanded) release
- An anniversary (possibly box set)
- Death of the artist (I am expecting a lot of expanded Horner's)
- Remastering to media (often studios flex the capabilities of the new media and release isolated scores as features) or new technology (Ultra HD/Archival Disc) | only if the video and audio tracks are discretely available for (re-)muxing.

It's a commercial decision not a philantrophic one.

In some cases it's neither. If it's not a high profile new movie, not a lot of money can be made from a soundtrack recording. Predator 2 as a film is best forgotten (thankfully), how many units do you think they'll sell?

Or the Prague re-recordings of entire film scores. It's not so much a matter of how much money they'll make, it's about how to lose as little money as possible. They're being made because a producer WANTS to get them made, HE thinks they're important. Same goes for the Tribute recordings that were financed by a well-meaning millionaire (or millionaire's wife IIRC).

If I won the lottery I'd sponsor some albums that I want, but certainly wouldn't care about the opinion of some people on a board. I would be prepared to lose money on them (David Buttolph's House of Wax would be one such project - no money to be made there).

As idealistic as this may sound, I still believe that a smart company will take its consumer base into consideration--even if it's just a tiny bit.
I'd like to think that peeking in on a website like this from time to time can be a useful tool in determining future product.

A company that ignores what its customers have to say may still succeed in spite of this, but the ill will they engender may rouse the rabble to the point where not only will the customers abandon them, they might also take steps to sabotage sales of the product.
It's an illustration of the saying which states (more or less), "an unhappy customer spreads the word to MANY more people than a happy one".

Here's a different take - how much influence does this board have on members?

I know I've re-evaluated many a score, and been introduced to many others, because of thoughtful, intelligent posts from numerous members of this board. Often when someone writes well about something I've dismissed, or don't know. (I'm not at all influenced by negative posts, I find.) Another way of saying it is you lot have cost me a lot of money.

I don't care whether we influence producers, I think the better job is to see if we can positively influence each other!

I doubt this board has any influence this way or that way, which is as it should be -- it should be a place that nurtured free speech; which is open for both positive and negative (and even indifferent) reactions to labels and issues in general.

What it DOES have, however, is a means for the producers to chart reactions to their product. FSM being the biggest and most active film music forum on the internet (that I'm aware of), this is a valuable resource. At least it has that poential.

But I'm not a producer, so I'm just speculating.

Agree with the second half. The FSM board is the place where after months, sometimes years of work we're told just how bad of a product we just released and how this or that user/person could have done it 100 times better. It's nice to see folks happy with a release or seeing someone say on here, OH MY GOSH I never thought I'd ever see a release of...The Long Long Trailer or some other great score. I think I can agree ALL all labels and producers work their tales off whether it be La-La Land, Kritzerland, Varese, Intrada, Quartet etc. etc. on every single release to make sure it's the best it can be. Do goof ups happen of course, we never said we're perfect, but that's when we ask for you the listener/the buyers patience sometimes. We all try our best and appreciate all the folks who buy these goodies smile

Producers: How much weight do you put on what we ask for?

About 1.5%

LOL. This is by far the best reaction in the entire thread. Brownie points to you, Josh.
