Will be picking this up asap:

THE NEW DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE SPECIAL IS MUSIC TO OUR EARS!

For the first time in the 36-year history of Doctor Who Magazine – an entire issue devoted to the music and sound design of Doctor Who!

From Delia Derbyshire’s groundbreaking experiments in the Radiophonic Workshop, to the acclaimed performances of Murray Gold’s orchestral scores at the Royal Albert Hall, The Music of Doctor Who explores one of the most celebrated and mysterious sonic landscapes in television history.

"We think this Special Edition is unprecedented in its scope and detail," says editor Marcus Hearn. "Writers such as Mark Ayres and Andrew Pixley have contributed a fresh insight to an aspect of the show’s production that’s been overlooked for too long."

Highlights of the issue include:
Interviews with Tristram Cary, Dudley Simpson and Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll.
Contributions from David Arnold, Neil Brand and Steven Moffat.
Sections devoted to every composer to have worked on the programme.
The strange world of library music.
The history of the Radiophonic Workshop.
The complete guide to pop music in Doctor Who.

Thanks for posting this! It looks to be tough to get in the USA for less than $30 (going by Amazon and ebay) - anyone know a good source of these in the colonies?

You can try these folks: https://www.galaxy4.co.uk/product.thtml?id=4123&vts=g5ddAgI

As well as online sales, it's a physical (Doctor Who/sf) shop in Sheffield that I pop in occasionally. Nice people and reasonable prices.

Alternatively there's this site: http://www.newsstand.co.uk/106-General-Magazines/1846-Subscribe-to-DOCTOR-WHO-SPECIAL-Magazine-Subscription.aspx

The link should have the US price for you.

Although it's no good to me because I still like physical magazines, but apparently the digital version has links that are clickable that instantly link to the youtube videos of the music involved! How thoughtful.

As far as I can tell still not released digitally in app. Curious. Supposed to be at same time UK print.

This is a great magazine, really enjoying it. But a bit surprised at the very small section (just one column if I remember) on Murray Gold's music specifically - though the songs in the current series get a lot of attention.

Apparently Murray was interviewed for the special, but later refused it's use. I personally think that this might just be because the majority of the magazine is about the Classic Series. The editor did say MG had a fair reason.

In all honesty I feel his music (with all that goes with it - the concerts etc) does deserve a quarter of the magazine's coverage, since his music actually covers a quarter of the total 40 solid years of tv production. The special does a rundown of the decades. With the 60s, 70s and 80s, and then with Gold doing the last ten years that's actually about right.

So it does look exceedingly odd that he simply gets a footnote right at the end! The TV Movie of 1996 gets a full page, which is again appropriate to the total of music within the series as a whole.

Thanks for that explanation, it at least makes sense but is certainly curious.

I think it's a great shame, and a missed opportunity, especially if there isn't a follow up that's all about Murray Gold. It also means that the cover, with the present Doctor Peter Capaldi and the ad blurbs, is just a little misleading.

On the other hand I didn't mention any of this in my original post for the simple reason that what there IS here is superb and definitely worth the cover price. It's virtually a book put out as a magazine. And lovingly researched.
