Cant find any threads in search engine for this series except p.r. Releases.

Whats the verdict on the second series? I thought it was brilliant.
Farrell was excellent and vince vaughn as the villain-but-not-the-worst-villain just got better and better.

I thought series two was a vast improvement on series one, which only got going after about episode 6.
I spend the first five episodes trying to comprehend matthew mcConaughys mumbling and exaggerrated drawl.

Anybody else got a view on the series?

Different strokes, Bill. I found the only interesting thing about Season 2 was the intro title song. I was disappointed as I had enjoyed Season one a lot. I did like Vince Vaughn's character, a large street shootout, and the final episode. However, I thought the large underlying crime was confusing in itself and one in which real estate just did not interest me.

I watched it. While I really enjoyed Vince Vaughan, Colin's character felt very creepy to me. I was actually uneasy at times; which maybe is a sign of great acting and writing? Not sure, but it's not enough to make me watch reruns, ala Sopranos.

I couldn't even make it through the first season. Quite an unsettling show with unlikable characters. I barely finished the first episode. I'm surprised they made a second season.

"From the unceasing apocalyptic horrors of The Walking Dead to the chilly murder mystery of The Killing, the dark serial-killer thriller The Fall, and—the best of the bunch—the surreal nightmare world of Hannibal, prestige-TV land is a dreary country. At least Tyrion gets drunk and tells some witty jokes now and then. And into this dimly-lit landscape, chewing on a bottle of whiskey while stabbing itself in the eye to try and see if it can still feel, True Detective strides in, determined to be the grimmest of the bunch. Second season was unrelated and unrecognisable from series one.
First series was harrelson and mcConaughy chasing a serial killer.
Second series was about 3 cops - who you really arent sure if they are good or bad for a chunk of the series - who come together to investigate a killing which unearths more killings, prostitutes for rich and influential senators and rogue cops.

I posted this on another topic:

True Detective Season One was one of the most compelling and suspenseful series I had seen. But this season...it was probably the worst series that HBO has produced in some time. It was such a boring and confusing mess and with the exception of Rachael McAdams, was horribly miscast with Vince Vaughn as a gangster(yeah, go ahead and giggle-but he did try hard though to be menacing) and the finale made it worse. Gah. I mean, so many names of corrupt cops and politicians were thrown around, talking about decades old cases and illicit land deals and other shit that made no difference to the overall story line, and yet there was no real central villain. Very disappointing.

Season 1 took a while to interest me. Mathew’s long ramblings bored me at first. Still I was hooked and really liked it. Amazing acting. Season 2 was so very dark and angst-ridden. Too angst-ridden. I could not follow the main mystery, and I didn’t care for some of the personal side issues. Still, I thought the acting from the three main cops was superb, and I wanted to know what would happen to them. The main shoot out a few episodes ago was stunningly choreographed. I thought those shreds of nobility that we glimpsed now and then in the 4 main characters were intriguing. Sadly, the ending was a big letdown.

Id go with that joan.
Spoilers. The acting was excellent. Not sure i agree with the view that vince vaughn wasnt convincing - he was a pretty creepy psycho when he turned and you were never quite sure when that was gonna happen.
What i liked was the large chunk of the series where you were pretty certain Farrell was a scumbag only for him to at least try some redemption over the last four or so episodes. Mcadams was excellent and the episode where she goes undercover and rescues the prostitute and has to - even tho shes horribly drugged - knife her way out of the clutches of the security guy, I thought was superb.
As joan says the raid shootout a few episodes before was also brilliantly filmed.
I take the point about the convoluted villainy and what was going on, faceless crooks, but it in the end it wasnt that important, it was really about the lives of the four main characters and equally the impossible odds they faced and not knowing quite what they were up against.
There are so many sickly sweet cop series, with lots of flirting and banal banter, this was a serious antidote to that and you knew you were watching something darker, where anything could happen and none of the main characters were assured of survival.

Like I did with TOP OF THE LAKE I bailed after 1 or two eps
and
apparently made a wise decision.
check out season one: so superbly directed, written and acted that the lack of a compelling mystery is not that big of a deal (sorta like Raymond Chandler's mysteries)

Loved season 1. Thought season 2 showed some promise but soon became a jumbled mess.

This is what I wrote about it for the CC's Pinterest Board of Amazing Television ( https://www.pinterest.com/arthurgrant9883/amazing-television/ )

"True Detective Season 2: Like season 1, the overall intensity, performances and some of the brilliantly staged action scenes were amazingly accomplished. The quieter, more intimate moments were mesmerizing, really drawing us in. On the downside, the plot became more frustratingly diffused and convoluted as each episode progressed, increasingly adding characters and side-related incidents until it finally just imploded, leaving most of its shredded strands incomprehensibly introduced. "

I enjoyed season 1 quite a bit, even though it was frustrating in the end, going from strong suggestions of a very dark Lovecraft inspired horror conspiracy to a looney guy in a big house talking in a ridiculous accent smile Even though in the end, the leads admitted " oh the big fish got away but we got our man", the wholesale dropping of ( what was built up to be ) the big picture felt awkward and sloppy. Still, it was gripping television drama.

I gave up on the second series at the end of episode one. It was so ridiculously dark and grim with every single character being human garbage and the story intentionally vague, for me it killed any interest in following the rest of the series.

However, if the second season only got the green light after the surprise sensation success of season one, then it may be kinda understandable. Writing 500 or so pages of screenplay, casting, shooting, and getting the whole thing completed in a year is a huge feat, so there was little time to revise things.

Maybe it was asking too much, too soon?

I've just watched this awesome TV series and I can't get the theme tune out of my head.
It's like it's a continuous never ending tape loop...........
