Anyone know who is scoring the new Walking Dead series? Assume that it's Bear McCreary, but IMDB doesn't say and neither does Bear's website.

My understanding is that it's Paul Haslinger, not Bear.

Yep, confirmed. Main Title Theme by Atticus Ross, music by Paul Haslinger.

That's a strong word.

Saw the first episode and fast forwarded through most of it really. It felt like bad 90s writing with the 'blame it on the drugs' routine, the drug addicts' den and dealer, the kid with the 'premonition' attitude and the undead conveniently gone or popping up when the plot requires so. A pilot directed by Frank Darabont this was not, it felt really clunky and tame compared to anything The Walking Dead did.

I agree there is no theme and the score was used to make things scarier when in actuality there was no tension, there were no scares and it was boring. I've never fast forwarded through one episode of Walking Dead.

It was a slow burner. I' m a big fan of Bear McCreary and although I liked what I heard of the score, it was far more in your face than Bear's background score. For a pilot that had to set up quite a bit, certainly when it came to characters, I thought it did well. I did groan at some of the "homages" to other zombie movies, especially Shaun of the Dead. (Some of the dialogue even seemed to foreshadow events in the same way Shaun of the Dead did).

Examples I noticed:
The Church scenes reminded me of 28 Days Later
When Madison approaches Art, listening in to the classes, it reminded me of Shaun approaching his "Dad" in Shaun of the Dead.
The attack on the gurney was similar to scenes in Romero's Diary of the Dead.
Madison is looking out of the passenger window of a car and sees a dark figure in a park, that could be a zombie. That was very similar to a scene in Shaun of the Dead.

I agree with Francis in that the pilot felt a bit uneven and even boring compared to anything in THE WALKING DEAD, but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I need another show to follow right now, and this might be it.

With Walking Dead flipping between good episodes and awful, awful ones, I'll give this a few episodes, mainly due to the leads, Kim Dickens and Cliff Curtis. The young leads, the drug user and the bitch, were just awful and I hope they get eaten soon big grin

Haslinger's score was instantly forgettable, though. Next week we'll probably get an actual titles sequence and see what Ross' theme has to offer.

If you want solid electronic scoring, check out Mac Quayle's Tangerine Dream homage work with his excellent score for the TV show Mr. Robot. The show and music are great.

Actually enjoyed Fear's score better... the ambiance Bear creates for Walking is getting boring. Fears music, front and center, added an extra layer of suspense that I think Walking misses. We'll see how the latter episodes go.

Often pilot episodes are rather dull as those episodes try to cover background, characters, etc. This pilot was VERY dull for me, and I'm a fan of The Walking Dead which has had its up and down episodes.

I too will give this new program a few more chances, but it needs to improve. I was too bored to really notice the music.

The pilot episode was underwhelming, and so were some of the actors' performances. However, Cliff Curtis is a good actor, and Frank Dillane does a doped-up Ted Logan almost too well, so I'm going to chalk it up to script and direction. I hope the series picks up steam, which I imagine it will.

Yes, Paul Haslinger's score wasn't anything to write home about.

Most of these homages seem directed at John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS.

I didn't feel that at all. I'm not arguing as it's a personal thing. Yeah, there were scenes that took place in a church but I felt they owed more to the church scene in 28 Days Later. Some of the choices of direction even seemed to mirror that movie, except there was no graffiti saying that the end is extremely effing nigh ;-)
The bodies scattered around the pews reminded me of 28 Days Later when Jim is looking at the pews and notices movement, before he's chased by the infected.

So the final episode of this series just aired. I have to say that the last couple of episodes had disastrous scripts. Soap opera galore, one endless empty, überdramatic clichée after the other, and characters who didn't really believe in their own lines. One particular reunion scene is about as anti-climactic as I've ever seen.

Be that as it may, it was a nice show to follow for all these years that had a pretty consistent quality, except for the last couple of seasons. Should have ended a couple of seasons ago.

So that was the final episode? I haven’t watched it yet. Seems as if they were just filling out their contract with AMC. I’ve watched them but such a let down after The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon which is excellent.

I watched every episode in every season of WALKING DEAD, which was uneven to say the least, and while the first seasons were great, the show took some turns for the worse in its later seasons. Worst was the replacement of some vital characters with all the folks from "Magna's group", nearly all of which were horribly written characters that I just wish would finally get eaten by zombies or killed by enemies... alas, no such luck. smile And the Commonwealth plot with its political undertones and back story was just very heavy handed, and I never fully bought all the killings and conspiracies going on there. It was stated the Commonwealth had about 50,000 people. While that is larger than any of the other communities up to that point, it's still only the size of a small city. So disappearing people would make the rounds quite quickly.
On the plus side: Angela Kang managed to make the zombies scary again in the final season, individual episodes were at times very good. The conflict with the "Reapers" at the beginning of season 11 played out much better than the whole commonwealth deal at the end of season 11.

I did watch the first season of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, but never continued with season 2... it was just too many zombie shows. Even though some WD characters, especially Morgan Jones, crossed over to FTWD. Not sure if and when I will pick up another one... DARYL DIXON looks like it could become interesting.

The best part of the last episodes was the little girl played by Antonella Rose. She brought more life and better acting chops than the rest of the cast combined.
