ON SALE! WINTER 2018 SIMIANS & SERIALISM is the first book that examines Jerry Goldsmith's legendary serial score to the 1968 sci-fi classic “Planet of the Apes.” Writer, Musician and Filmmaker John O'Callaghan spent more than three years researching and analyzing each and every cue Goldsmith composed for Arthur P. Jacobs' production of Franklin J. Schaffner's film. The heart of this book is a section titled “Composing 'Planet of the Apes'” where the cues of the score are broken down under the following framework: • Overview (A description of the film’s action behind the cue.) • Objective (Goldsmith’s musical/technical/emotional goal for each cue.) • Technical Details (The start/end location of each cue in the film, length, tempos, notable meters and other changes.) • Orchestration (From the music, Orchestra Breakdown sheet and original recording sessions.) • Music Analysis (Discussing tone row references, motifs, cue specific events and music theory utilizing 49 illustrations—including examples from Goldsmith's score.) • Arcane Minutiae Ad Nauseam (Edits, alterations, deletions, memos and tidbits both related and unrelated to the score designed to be both informative and fun.) SIMIANS & SERIALISM delves into the epic development, production and release history of “Planet of the Apes” and its four sequels—which includes fascinating information on surprising scoring assignments won and lost by Goldsmith in the late 60's and early 70's. There's also lots of new, unknown details on the “Apes” films revealed for the first time in this book—demystifying several decades-old legends. As a bonus, the book has sections comparing the Film, LP and CD versions of the “Planet of the Apes” score, 3 Appendices and a handy Glossary of Terms defining music and filmmaking jargon. You'll find all of this and more wrapped in a beautifully produced, 272 page, 6” x 9” Trade Paperback. SIMIANS & SERIALISM has something in it for everyone whether you're a total novice who doesn't know a sharp from a flat, or an expert on music theory. Maybe you're just a fan of film music who's simply looking to learn what this Serial Technique Goldsmith used is all about! Written to stimulate a healthy discussion and expand understanding of the magnificent work Jerry Goldsmith did to help make “Planet of the Apes” a stunning success, this book is for everyone who loves film music. Wasn't able to select a province when entering my shipping info - only States listed. Any other Canadians have this problem when ordering? Help please... Yes, there are no provinces listed under the State/Province box. I thought I'd better hold off ordering for now, until it's commented here that they fixed it. Canadian Provinces/Territories are back in the system. To Peterproud and DavidCorkum, you're all clear if you want to purchase the book. Any issues give me a shout at info@PithikosEntertainment.com

I know that this may not be in the cards, but I'd happily buy an ebook version of this work. I live in Canada and $15 postage is a pretty good chunk of change - I know that's not your fault - shipping's just generally all around expensive these days, but it's causing me to really hesitate on this one. Chris. Hi Chris, Yeah, shipping's crazy now. Obviously, I would really like you to get a copy of my book , but I do understand the realities of spending hard-earned money on Books, CDs, Blu-rays, etc. I did consider an e-book version (along with the print version), but you have to do double everything—including layout, ISBNs, Licenses, etc.—and that's a huge up-front expense. So, (knowing the soundtrack world's preference for physical media) I went with the trade paperback.
