For those persons who truly do appreciate the music of Gerald Fried, maybe you'd like to tell Gerry himself. I have been a fan of Gerald Fried and his music for most of my 68 years, and I have enjoyed the friendship of this remarkably talented gentleman for twenty-five of these. Gerry is still very much alive and well, and living comfortably in retirement. I am sure, however, that it would brighten his day to know that his music has reached and touched favorably the many of you who have stated this as fact. Fried is a superb composer. I have enjoyed so many of his scores: Too Late the Hero (has one of those tunes you can't get out of your head), Cast a Long Shadow, Roots, Shotgun Slade, and his many contributions to The Man From Uncle. I had no idea that Gerald Fried was still us. More power to you,sir ! A few months ago, I bought a score of his that had slipped by me. It was sale time at Screen Archives and I jumped at the chance to get TOO LATE THE HERO. Needless to say, it is a score I enjoy very much. I wish his talent had taken him to the big studios. Then again, perhaps he didn't want it that way.

Very excited to hear Gerald's work on the "Mission: Impossible" collection from La La Land! I also think his score for "Birds Do It, Bees Do It" would make a wonderful companion Cd for Lalo Schifrin's "The Hellstrom Chronicle".

I do agree, he is indeed a wonderful composer/arranger etc, I was listening to Too Late The Hero only a few days ago and also his contributions to The Man From U.N.C.L.E as released on the FSM series. I like the others you mentioned also. I'm glad to hear that he is doing well and enjoying his retirement. BTW we are living in Co. Wexford until November, lovely country area near the beach, no next door neighbours to worry about so I can give my CDs a real blast through my big speakers!
I interviewed Fried a few years ago. He was very nice and -- by the way -- incredibly sharp for his age. I had wished I could record and present his little cute voicemail message, but that's not possible for me; he gavge some kind of message and then said to leave your number after the beep and proceeded to just say, "BEEEEEP!".
Even though retired, in the last three or four years he's scored two short films, so appearently he can still be talked into creating music if you ask nice enough. ;-)

There's a lot of information on Gerald Fried's music within this FSM thread on the non-Star Trek music by composers who worked on Trek TOS:
Purportedly, Paths of Glory was recorded in Germany and the recording is missing. Don't know what the hold-up is, though, on his music for the Roots TV mini-series (perhaps Intrada has this in their pipeline as we speak?)
Most interesting Fried scores? IMO, these are the 1972 The Baby directed by Ted Post and the 1959 Timbuktu. Fried's 'trilogy' (so to speak) of scores for director Robert Aldrich also deserves attention, such as the The Killing of Sister George with its lesbian love scenes between Susannah York and the spouse of Vincent Price (Coral Browne).
[this is, of course, assuming that you already own FSM's 2-discs on Fried's genre music, of which the '62 Cabinet of Caligari is the most interesting Fried score on CD thus far (IMO)]
Too bad that the acetates for his fantastic score for Kubrick's The Killing are reportedly unplayable. But with the modern transfer and mastering technologies, who knows?
I'd love to see some of Gerry's 1970s TV-movie scores released. Everyone involved with the Star Trek TOS release had dinner with Gerry the night before the launch event at the Egyptian Theater. My wife was unnerved by the size of the steak Gerry ordered--around the size of my thigh. But he wolfed it down without incident. He's twice the man most of us are at half his age...

If I ever come across the pond again, I will most certainly let you know. Another night at The Playwright would be a dream. Unfortunately, they have now made the seats even closer on the airlines, so that may not come to pass. But I will never forget my trip to Dublin. Thank you.
One thing I love about Fried's music is it's so distinctive...as the saying goes, no one writes in a vacuum, but his imprint is very unique.
Of all the FSM releases, the 2-disc set of four Fried scores gets a lot of replays. Actually, just the other day. I BURY THE LIVING was the score I was so happy to listen to finally, but each score is great.
