Nice to see Mel Gibson behind the camera. I believe Gibson wanted Horner to score the film before his passing, with John Debney stepping in. Any truth in this?

No idea, but I do love both these artists, even though both are distinctively 'troubled'. Trouble makes for great art as we have seen with all of Gibson's work, and to a somewhat moderated effect, with Debney.

What is happening?

The project seems to have disappeared from his IMDB and Kraft/Engel profile and now the only composer listed is Rupert Gregson-Williams!

Rupert is the new composer on the film. Troubled production alert!

Hmm.. here's an article from just a few days ago, sounding like he's finishing up and positive about the film.

RG-W is promoting it on his Twitter page now.

So far this smells like, to me, either: the studio is worried about the film and wanted a different score or: a dreaded test audience.

Nothing against Rupert Gregson-Williams (I have limited knowledge of his work anyway), but this sucks a bit. Gibson has drawn out Debney's very best work in the past, so this was another opportunity for something good.

I'm surprised nobody considered the possibility that Debney's score was not so good and then rejected, who knows. It's not like he's the best composer in the business...

You know what it's like around this place...

I agree that Debney isn't the most original composer around, but when he's inspired (like he was on PASSION OF THE CHRIST), it can result in some fine music nonetheless. It seems like he recorded a score for this that was then rejected very late in the game. It will be interesting to see if his original score will surface in some form later on.

Not a big fan of PASSION OF CHRIST's score, but sure Debney was a better choice than RGW. I used to like Debney's work in the 80s-90s but not anymore.

Seems Debney is no longer attached:

"There are moments, however, when Gibson might have done well to rein in composer Rupert Gregson-Williams (“The Legend of Tarzan”), who’s constantly putting too fine a point on Doss’s heroism in the field. The visuals are telling us what we need to know without the orchestra working overtime to do the same thing".

I think Debney was the second or even third composer on Passion of the Christ, so I suspect it's a Gibson thing.

The way I remember it, Horner opted out of scoring PASSION OF THE CHRIST on religious grounds (he was Jewish and the film wasn't very favourable to the Jewish faith, to say the least).
There was no 'bad blood' between Horner or Gibson, in fact, Horner may have recommended Debney to Gibson?
I recall Gibson (in a Timeout interview) basically saying 'I just let Jamie get on with it and do his thing' about the scoring process on Braveheart.
Horner was set to score his Viking epic (starring DiCaprio) which fell apart when Gibbo had the meltdown.
I'm sure Horner would have scored Hacksaw Ridge, if he was still with us frown
I think Gibson and Cameron are getting/about to get a crash course in the 'REALLY missing someone when they're gone' school of life.

That is correct. From maybe his final interview:

I'm going to do–and it's extremely important to me historically–Mel's next movie. He's going to direct a film and it's hugely important for him. He's so brilliant and I want to be there in that moment in film history because I think Hollywood is so shallow, and what's been done to him is so dreadful, and as a filmmaker he's so brilliant… and it'll only take one film–I just know how this stuff works–all he has to do is make one film and he'll be re-embraced, whether it's about the Maccabees or whatnot… And that's what I'm working on next. http://jameshorner-filmmusic.com/bafta-guru-a-conversation-with-james-horner/

Don't regret Debney. The score is surprisingly powerful and sounds like a mix between Kingdom of Heaven, JNH and Zimmer's style in the 90s, with many orchestral flourishes. So much better than TARZAN !
And the film is an old school and gore masterpiece.

My colleagues saw the film in Venice and loved it -- which only heightened my expectations even more. It's a shame that neither Horner nor Debney got to score this, but my colleagues said that Rupert's music harkened back to some of his brother Harry's work -- esp. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, as you say, and that happens to be one of the few HGW works I like, so that's a good sign.

In fact I'm happy Debney did not score it-I'm not particularly a fan of his music. And yes, HACKSAW's main theme sounds A LOT like KINGDOM's.
