Marco Beltrami has been hired to score the upcoming epic historical drama Ben-Hur. The film is directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and stars Jack Huston as Judah Ben-Hur, Morgan Freeman as Ilderim, Toby Kebbell as Messala, Nazanin Boniadi as Esther and Rodrigo Santoro and as Jesus Christ. Sofia Black D’Elia, Ayelet Zurer, Moises Arias and Pilou Asbæk are co-starring. The movie is based on Lew Wallace’s epic novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ and follows a falsely accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. Keith Clarke (The Way Back) and John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) have written the screenplay. Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, Dazed and Confused), Mark Burnett (Son of God, The Bible), Joni Levin (The Way Back) and Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Oblivion) are producing the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Paramount Pictures production. Ben-Hur is set to be released on Februrary 26, 2016.

Beltrami’s latest project, Fantastic Four, is opening nationwide this coming weekend. The composer has also recently been recording his score for Alex Proyas’ Gods of Egypt in Australia. His other upcoming projects include Hitman: Agent 47, which is set to open on August 21, 2015 and No Escape (previously entitled The Coup), which will be released on August 26, 2015.

I don't know why he's wasting his time with this when he could be scoring MTV's Scream: The TV Series, but whatever. wink

A well-deserved assignment. Not sure about Bekmambetov's particular brand of artistry, but I think Beltrami could do spectacularly with an assignment such as this.

I see no Quintus Arrius in any of the cast lists online.

He may be lying low, given the likelihood of this film being a complete bust.

I don't think there's a Balthazzar either. That's an omission that tells you most of that you need to know ... that the mythic underpinning is flawed. It'll be sweaty boys in S&M leather probably.

There are lots of characters who shouldn't be there of course. When you miss the layers you have to fill in.

I imagine Morgan Freeman will play his part as more of an Obi-Wan Kenobi than an Ilderim.

And I wonder if Beltrami will score the actual chariot race, just to be different to Rozsa.

For this movie to have any significance, it should part considerably from the 1959 version, considering that the latter is a certified iconic movie classic.

Yes, and that's Balthassar's role, as the 'Grand Old Man' and mystic. Ilderim is another thing entirely, the shrewd man of the world. Or should be.

I've seen this director's NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH movies; very fast-paced, very quick editing, very violent.
Looks like they're removing the spiritual element from the 1959 version. Which, by the way, is what Ben-Hur's journey is really all about.
Like the post above about the two boys in S&M outfits.
Lots of CGI too, I'm sure.

It'll be a novel re-adapted again and again, and there are still a lot of unexplored places to take the screenplay.

But it shouldn't depart from Wallace's original spiritual/allegorical/mythic journey. These fellas need to know what is baby and what is bathwater.

Just think what Baz Luhrmann could do with this story line -- Leo DiCaprio, hip hop music -- hotttt!!!

My guess is that it will be to the '59 version what 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" etc is to Kubrick's film. IOW, reverence and depth against flash and trash. Can't wait for the 8.5s on IMDB posted by all the testosterone-fuelled 17-year-olds.

Actually, from what I understand they're BOOSTING the spiritual element, and the role of Jesus, in line with recent faith-based movies. Roma Downey is one of the producers.

But it's hard to see the movie being anything but a curio, if not an outright embarrassment.

Really looking forward to this. Usually tend to get a great score from these Historical themed movies.

Nope, definitely now.

They may sound different, but they can still sound good.

After 'Wanted', I was hoping he would go for Danny Elfman again. Doesn't Beltrami have a similar project going with 'Gods of Egypt'?

Wow a Danny Elfman Ben-Hue score would be quite interesting!
I love the score to Wanted!
