It is my firm belief that I'm the only person on the planet who absolutely loves Group 87's single "The Search for Spock"... what I want to know is, WHO performed this piece? I've read that Isham was a member, but was he actually one of the performers on this track? Who are the others?!!!

Jim...I am the other person in the world who loves this track too! But I also love the Ce3K pop single and anything by Meco. Group 87 is/was mark isham, peter maunu and patrick o'hearn....2/3 jazz/new age film composers. Oh,.....I also love the BLUE THUNDER EXTENDED MIX by The Beepers!
The vinyl release of the "Searching for Spock" soundtrack was unusual in that this Group 87 track constituted the inclusion of an entire second physical album, forming a "Side 3" with a blank 4th side despite not being mentioned. One Youtube'rs look at:
The UK Silva Screen release of the CD omitted this track entirely.
I do have this vinyl release, and indeed, they devoted an entire LP just to this one single track (not a single... heck if I know why). The nice thing about it was thought that the Star Trek III vinyl release had a nice double LP cover. :-)
I totally forgot about the single. Didn't even dawn on me when FSM released the expanded edition. But I could have sworn the single was on a 45 record.

That "Group 87" track did exist this way as a 7" 45 RPM in both promo and retail sleeve versions, yes:
However the item included with the album was a 12" 33 RPM.

Wish I kept my old LP's! I got rid of them as every release came out on CD.
Those tracks are usually my favourite on the soundtrack or a very very close second. I love the disco tracks on "Coma" and love the pop version of "Space camp". I am absolutely unapologetic as far as my liking of this music.
While we're still on the subject of the Horner score... I can't remember... were the FSM releases of TWOK and TSFS PREMIERE CD releases, or did both scores have a previous CD release before the FSM complete versions? I SEEM to recall that I have a CD of TWOK... but I might be wrong!
About the 45 single, I think one side is a soundtrack cut conducted by Horner and the other side is by Group 87.
The Capitol promo 45 (P-B-5365, S99385) on white label, images seen at https://www.45cat.com/record/pb5365 and the Youtube video I posted above, actually has this Group 87 track the same on both sides and no indication of "A" or "B" for that matter. They were shoving this track down the throat of anyone who came into this single.
