For me, what made the film work more than the black humor was the way that Cruise's character wasn't instantly a savior for the human race because of his unusual circumstances. He has to adapt to the situation and avoid admitting what's happening head on, but figure out how he can avert our extinction. Then there were the phases he went through, as anyone in that position would, much like Ramis addressed in Groundhog Day. First, he tries to save everyone, but it gets him killed. Next, he goes the opposite route because saving everyone is too painful and lets everyone die, but that still doesn't work. Then there's the wonderful reveal in which Rita learns that they have the ability to get outside the combat area, but he has no idea how to complete his objective without getting her killed. I also really enjoyed the way that he was such a self absorbed leech at the beginning of the movie and didn't realize what strides he'd made near the end of his journey until Rita came out and told him. It's that kind of character material that I love, and that really makes this film work. Damn, I need to buy this movie.
