I've avoided this by buying used - making the assumption that used copies are more than likely original releases. Only done it with a handful, but it's worked so far.

Not sure, but maybe you could buy from Amazon UK (directly, not from a marketplace seller). As far as I'm aware, they don't supply CDRs (I guess it's not expected by UK consumers), whereas Amazon USA does state this on the product page, and presumably consumers there have accepted this type of CD format.
But make sure it is offered by Amazon themselves, and not just a seller that is "fulfilled by Amazon".
I bought Steiner's Lost Patrol a few years ago, and it was a proper pressed disc. I checked the site again today, and it is still listed as available. However, I did notice the link to reviews on Amazon.com on the UK page takes you to a CDR product on the USA site. But that might just be because Amazon annoyingly lump everything together (e.g. all versions of the same CD having the reviews merged together).
I once ended up with a CDR of Herrmann' s Garden of Evil (Marco Polo), but it was only available through a marketplace seller, so I presume I was sent the CDR version which seems to be the "official" version on Amazon.com. That put me off getting any others once I realised I could be "tricked" like that.
One other thing, I was reading on another forum (for rock music) that a specialist label was supplying CDRs to customers for some of their bands, and when they complained, the label just provided an angry response stating they were not obliged to specify they were offering CDRs (http://heavyharmonies.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=27075). Whereas the customers were trying to justify that they expect pressed CDs unless stated otherwise. It looks like these practices are now occurring, and it's difficult to argue which side is right, so it's worth being more alert to this nowadays. A similar thing happened again to me recently with a soundtrack supplier I hadn't used before for a title that I know for fact has previously been available as a proper pressed CD, so consequently I won't be ordering from them again in future as this wasn't stated on their product page.

Unfortunately, Amazon.co.uk do sell a number of these as CD-Rs. They're usually marked up as such, however, but not always - and these cases are probably genuine oversights, rather than anything else. However, they do seem to have quite a few of the original CD versions, too. It's quite often pot-luck re: which you'll get if you place an order. But their returns service is good if they do turn out to be CD-R.
Interesting, I thought it was only in America.
I guess Amazon wouldn't be aware of it if the manufacturer of the CD doesn't state this, and it gets passed down the supply chain to Amazon with no mention of this. But it's the official "CD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand" that I don't think Amazon UK does.
But I agree with you that Amazon's customer service is great, you can just send it back hassle-free if unsatisfied.
EDIT: Actually, I do recall getting a Mark Isham CDR (I think it was The Conspirator), presumably supplied to Amazon from his own label, and not specified as such. I felt quite disappointed, particularly as Howard Shore's label provides pressed CDs.
