I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I've been listening to a lot of Horner scores lately.

And there are so many scores to listen to or re-disover.

But I'm interested to hear which lesser known scores you guys love, but don't think get enough attention. Or are misunderstood gems. Or are much maligned, but worth a listen.

For me, 'The Devil's Own' has turned out to be one of my most listened to Horner scores.

It's a very beautiful, subdued and contemplative score, which I listen to often to relax, and just enjoy Horner's genius.

It really is a score that bottles all that made Horner so great.
It has a wonderful main theme, which is woven delicately and stirringly throughout (The New World)
It has those wonderful Horner chords full of rich warmth and emotion. (Secrets Untold)
And it utilises his beloved Irish textures subtly and hauntingly. (Launching the Boat)

The action music is quite restrained.
Very small in scale, but full of emotion and humanity. He was so good at finding the underlying feelings of the characters during action.

It's a score that could come across as 'workman-like' by Horner, but I think it's actually one of his most quietly powerful and beautiful compositions.

And yet, you barely hear of any mention of it.

So that's my hidden Horner gem.

What's yours?

I recently discovered Beyond Borders. It's rapidly become a favourite Horner score of mine as it's quite superb.

Deep Impact - Because most think it was a copy of Titanic. A Distant Discovery, Crucial Rendezvous, The Wedding, The President's Speech, and one of my favorite longer Horner tracks Drawing Straws are all great highlights.

House of Sand and Fog - low key, but beautiful and very fresh sounding for Horner.
Star Trek 3 - it's seldom given its due, but for me it's just as good as its predecessor.
Beyond Borders - someone else mentioned this one, but it's a truly beautiful score.

The Chumscrubber and The Life Before her Eyes are subtle, mystic, and almost ambient, really beautiful Horner's scores ! I love them!

A favorite of mine that gets rarely mentioned and is often overlooked is CASPER. It's both fun and touching, "Elmanesque" so to speak, yet clearly a "true" Horner.

Deep Impact is much better than Titanic.

As I recall a lot of people did not dig Patriot Games but I've always had a lot of admiration for that one.

The Missing. It's fantastic. Movie is underrated too.

Balto has so many amazing highlights but doesn't get talked about all that often.

The Legend of Zorro, while it may be somewhat popular, is in my opinion more energetic and superior in many ways to its predecessor, with far superior thematic development and arguably the best action music of Horner's career. I don't think the majority shares my opinion, however.

I feel the same about The Search for Spock. Khan might have more amazing highlights, but Spock is the superior composition as a whole, IMO. More developed, more emotionally powerful. Also better performed and recorded. Horner was always good about refining ideas from score to score.

TESTAMENT, without question one of his most moving scores.

If you don't have this in your collection, seek it out.

House of Cards never gets mentioned much. It's one of his early "ethnic" scores.

"We're Back: A Dinosaurs Story"- Contains one of his most beautiful themes ever. I've never seen this score mentioned or put on anyone's best of lists.
