INTRADA Announces:

CAPRICORN ONE
Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH
INTRADA INT 7142

Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1978 film Capricorn One unknowingly created a template for the next quarter-century of action scores. The cat-and-mouse chase and escape sequences afforded Goldsmith the opportunity to compose some of the most unique suspense and exciting action set-pieces of his lengthy career, not to mention the appearance of a subtly melancholy romantic theme that speaks to love tragically lost.

Ten years ago Intrada premiered the original film recordings on a limited edition CD that quickly sold out. The justifiably famous LP released at the time of the movie's debut was a re-recording made by Goldsmith, containing edited highlights, arranged and reorchestrated by Goldsmith. Performances on the Intrada are crisper and cues have significant complex detail, including much of the electronics, that were deleted from the LP arrangement. Rather than simply re-use the master from the 2005 release, Intrada has rebuilt, reassembled and remastered the music to improve the sound, including an additional alternate not previously released.

The conspiracy-thriller tells the story of a voyage to Mars. But did the astronauts ever reach their destination? In Capricorn One, a misguided attempt to save a failing space program results in a faked landing on Mars. They almost get away with it, too, until the real unmanned space capsule burns up during re-entry and the three "astronauts" find themselves facing certain execution. Directed by Peter Hyams, the film stars Elliot Gould, James Brolin, Sam Waterston, Brenda Vaccaro, Hal Holbrook, Karen Black, O.J. Simpson, and Telly Savalas.

Jerry Goldsmith
Label: Intrada MAF 7142
Date: 1978
Time: 59:48
Tracks: 28

Remastered CD release of landmark, actual Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack from popular Peter Hyams conspiracy/action thriller starring Elliot Gould, James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, Hal Holbrook, Sam Waterston, Brenda Vaccaro. Not to be confused with 1978 Warner Bros. album featuring re-recorded highlights, this is a slightly revised new mastering of Intrada's 2005 world premiere of Goldsmith's complete film soundtrack, recorded by Aaron Rochin at MGM Studios in August 1977. Satisfied owners of that debut release need not feel compelled to apply.

Others take note: working from Rochin's original first generation session mixes allows us to add one "extra" to previous program. Listeners will now find an early take of "Docking", ostensibly similar to final film version but featuring subtle changes in dynamics of undulating xylophone parts, brass crescendos. One other minor change: "Kay's Theme" (heard in pool hall/bar sequence) now plays as stand-alone cue, as does brief "Elliot Is Missing" music that follows. Goldsmith's intense, propulsive low brass ostinatos that drive much of the score are all-time career highlights, influencing future action scoring for decades to come.

Original liner notes by Jeff Bond, flipper booklet cover art design by Joe Sikoryak complete this powerhouse soundtrack release. Now available in Intrada's standard INT 7000 series, becoming readily available for new generations of exciting film score aficionados. Jerry Goldsmith conducts, delivers one of his all-time most exciting works!

Nice to have a chance to pick this up.

Fitting that it's re-released on the 46th anniversary of the moon landing for all you conspiracy theorists out there.

WOO-HOOOOO!!

Despite owning the original Intrada release (along with the rerecorded version)... to hear this has been rebuilt from the ground up with improved sonics and an alternate track makes this purchase a no-brainer. Jerry Goldsmith at his best!

Thanks Doug, Roger and the team for yet another sterling soundtrack CD for our collections.

Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.

Rumor has it that the next ten Intrada releases will be OJ Simpson movies and this is the first of the bunch.

And yes, I am kidding. lol

Anybody know why the end title track on the earlier Intrada release is 33 seconds longer (at 2:40) than the end title on the new one (2:07)? I read the description on the website, but if there's anything there that explains this curious fact, I missed it. Not a big deal, probably, but inquiring minds want to know! Great sounding release btw, though the earlier one isn't too shabby either.

Doug said it was typo in old release.

They'll definitely read things into that.

It's a bit weird, looking down at the price and seeing it in units and tens. I have to pinch myself otherwise I'll imagine the hundreds tagged on the left - it's been so long.

Thank you, Doug. Appreciated. smile

Edit: there's just one little thing. On The Station (track 23), the film had James Brolin's character in the station building, trying to phone anyone he knows with cash he's taken from the cash register. No one answers. He sits in contemplation. Right outside in the distance, the two Huey pursuit helicopters approach. Brolin hears them and turns round to see his worst fears realised. The chopper pilots land and two of them pass by the window. Now, at this point there was what I thought was a single harp playing, but it looks like it was a piano with maybe a synth. You can hear it in the movie. Only thing is, on this newly remixed version of the film score, that part is actually barely perceptible. I don't remember it being that way. Is there any reason why that part - which incidentally, is one of my favorite sections in the score - is so low in volume?

Is there any discernible difference in the sound quality to anyone who has heard the original based solely on the samples posted for this new release?

To my untrained ear the samples sound a tad hissier then the prior release. Though I tend to think a lot of Intradas releases seem to have a lot of tape hiss.

All things considered...it beats the alternative. Be happy you're here to be depressed!

True. The fact the original masters were dusted off is some indicator this is the definitive digital release.

Unfortunately, I've been noticing this trend as well - And often with scores that previously did not have this problem on earlier releases when applicable.

Mabye the makers of the Masters are erring on the side of more hiss to capture more music or musical range? Maybe because the audience has grown more sophisticated and doesnt expect pristine commerciall cds. Totally speculating.

Is the hiss within the tracks, or just at the start and ends?

I can't say I've noticed anything differently recently (although maybe I haven't been buying the applicable CDs), however I have noticed it for years at the start and ends of tracks on some archival releases, only because you don't get it for the short moment when it actually changes track.

I assumed that's the best the labels can do with older recordings, or maybe they've been increasing the volume during mastering lately.
