That depends on how much you value having the complete 70-minute score as originally recorded in good sound, along with a well-remastered version of the LP program as a bonus.

Original all the way (Music Box)

Don't worry, Jim Cleveland--you ALWAYS piss me off!!!

Yes, I am being facetious.

If I didn't possess both the Music Box and Tadlow releases, I simply couldn't live with myself.

So I should just get the Music Box edition.

I mean, um, all I need is the Tadliow.

But I'm crazy if I don't have both.

Great, thanks for clearing that up, guys.

To me the comparisons are obvious and unsurprising.

The Tadlow is a far superior recording which reveals more details.

But the Music Box Records is the original as conducted by Herrmann himself, and whether or not it's a better or worse performance, that makes it a priceless historic 'document' for that reason alone.

So, I side with all those who say: get both. I play both of them in roughly equal share. Neither makes the other redundant.

Now, if you really don't want to buy both and need to make a choice, then it just comes back to the age-old question. Are you at heart an 'prefer originals' kind of guy or a 'I like the best sounding version' kind of guy.

You'll know deep down which you are. And if you don't, then a toss of a coin is as good a decision strategy as any in this case.

Cheers

Another reason to get both: to support the efforts of the record label to preserve the original recording even in compromised circumstances, and to support Tadlow's efforts to give the music new life in state of the art sound.

Well said, Sir! Support of enterprising labels and producers is a major factor in all my purchasing decisions. That is precisely why I've ordered the new OBSESSION, even though I tend to find Herrmann's music less satisfying on records than in the cinema. And who knows but this new recording may be one of the exceptions that proves the rule for me.

, that makes it a priceless

Being a 'historic document' has no real relevance on a CD presentation, however.

I just listened to the Tadlow today and it blew me away. I got the original score a few weeks ago and thought it was good but the Tadlow really brings out the colours, the impressionist harmonies and the beauty in Herrmanns music. So glad I got it.

Finally got time to play my copy at last. Had been holding it for the EID holiday season and the anticipation was enormous.

Love the new recording. Its a brilliant performance bringing out many details from the orchestra that were not apparent in the recent remaster of the OST/album set. The sound quality on the blu ray 5.1 DTS is absolutely transparent and clear crystal. (The only quibble I may have is that the rear channels are not that well utilised - I suspect that ambience was more focused with a concert hall type acoustic thus limiting the majority to the front Left and Right channels ) Christopher Husted's superb liner notes are almost melancholy reflecting on Herrmann's last days (almost sad but reverential- While the wealth of production background and details are best left for the other Obsession cd and those are very comprehensive) Nic Raine and the orchestra lead a tour de performance of the score!

Love the performance of the choir and the balances of the organ. Many new wonderful nuances to get used to and enjoy.

Now cant wait for THE BLUE MAX and the SODOM & GOMMORAH recordings.

Have to say I really love both. The OST is too big to fit into my CD player; The Tadlow won't play on my turntable. wink

I'm quite glad to have both. The original recordings, both the album release and score, is so very welcome and not to be missed. But I was most pleased and surprised with the Tadlow re-recording. It's sound is stellar, and there's more detail found, making it a terrific compliment. If they OST were unavailable, you could be perfectly content to have this in the collection.
