Superman's illegal status has been common knowledge for decades, at the very least since the Ortiz Brothers released their big 1980 hit . . .
Found a pretty good translation, I think, though I'm not a Spanish expert:
Superman's An Illegal
(Spoken) It's a bird! It's a plane! No, man, it's a wetback! (Sung) He came from the sky tucked in a spaceship. From Krypton to Earth was such a long trip. We've one thing in common: we managed to skip Requesting American citizenship. You know there are laws about immigration and he simply lacks his documentation. So how can he work as a newspaper man? By rights he should be locked up in the can. But he's blue-eyed, tall and muy lovey-dovey; I'm dark-skinned, short and a little bit chubby. He got in for free but I had to pay. Coyotes ain't cheap but they sure know the way. Ain't impersonating a cop still a crime? As far as the draft, he never had time. Don't have no license to fly like a rocket! No social security card in his pocket. The man's got to go and this ain't a joke. He's stealing a job from American folk. Or let Lady Liberty send out the word; Aliens here have to fly like a bird. Ain't impersonating a cop still a crime? As far as the draft, he never had time. Don't have no license to fly like a rocket! No social security card in his pocket. That's priceless. Somehow I missed all of this (or forgot).
Back on topic I've never really liked any of the actors playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the movies. I've never liked Ben Affleck either. Though I admit he looks good here. Some actors don't get into their prime until their later years. Maybe that will be the case with him.
That Michael Cera-lite fella looks comically bad in this, but i guss we'll have to wait and see. I'll watch it (on DVD) for the Batfleck and hope he does well. I think he will. Interesting that they're including a nod to a dead Robin from Batman: A Death in the Family. I have to be honest and say that I thought Man of Steel had a great trailer, and cast, but the film was mostly awful.
I'll admit I like the Affleck idea, in a similar way that I like the Robert Downey Jr. casting as "Iron Man." It's because, in a way, he already IS Bruce Wayne. These superstar actors make absolutely silly money and the hardest work they might do for it is at the gym, trying to look younger than they are.
Affleck has proven to be a great director, but strictly speaking, what else does he really need to do for the rest of his life but . . . I dunno . . . serve humanity? He's got a great Batman chin, of course, as did Clooney (count me among those who think the B&R debacle was really not George's fault), so physically he strays from the Burtonesque "what kind of disturbed person has to dress up as a bat?" concept, but I frankly don't get as much of a kick out of "this lunatic battling this other lunatic" anymore.
I'm hoping the combined efforts of the new talents involved will result in some genuine human drama, instead of the extreme nuttiness we're now accustomed to. I enjoyed Affleck as real-life George Reeves in "Hollywoodland," (worth a look if you haven't seen it) and it was particularly intriguing to watch him in the silly outfit, with the Styrofoam muscles, trying to appear heroic even though the action had seriously winded him and his (character's) middle-aged body. He brought a kind of subtle nobility to that mostly internal struggle, and a kind of believability too, which (for me) gave him great personal appeal and likeability -- you know, HUMANITY?
I'm ready to really like Affleck's Batman. Go ahead Snyder, make a fool of me again.
I love it when you guys are more cynical than me! Shine on, you crazy diamonds!
Looks like I have two Jesse Eisenberg movies to look forward to in 2016, as he's returning to the Woody Allen universe in the director's upcoming film (I have grown quite fond of To Rome with Love and Eisenberg's performance in it).
Yes, Affleck looks to be the emotional centerpiece of this, despite the "equal time" speechifying Superman's ma gives him in the trailer. I don't think Cavill even gets a line in it.
At the risk of sounding too henry or moonie about things, I'm really looking forward to the film.
Without getting spoilery, of course...is this film going to reboot the DCU? Are they going to have their films be inter-related or at least vaguely reference one another like Marvel's film series is? If not, then their film department is just as poorly organized as their comic reprints department (and highly frustrating, to boot).
As someone who's never really been into comics or superheroes and their movies, this thing seems like it could be the greatest homoerotic camp fest ever. What are they thinking?
Some of the effects look "cool" but at the same time look terribly fake. Typical of this guys work. I also dislike the over saturation and monotone tinting. It's funny how DC used to be lighter in tone while Marvel tackled more real life issues. (in the golden and silver days) But when it comes to the movies, Marvel has more sense of fun while the DC movies are all serious, grim and dark.
That Michael Cera-lite fella looks comically bad in this, but i guss we'll have to wait and see.
I think that should be Michael Cera is Jesse Eisenberg-lite, since JE is the one with the Oscar nomination.
True enough. I just don't think he has the onscreen cinematic presence of a Cera though!
i never saw the Social Network, i'm assuming he was very good in it, but everything else i've seen him in i've not been a fan. Zombieland was the first thing i saw him in, and he was okay, i just thought it seemed like they couldn't afford Cera at the time, so got him.
The last movie I saw in a movie Theater that I really liked, was Sean Penn in MILK. And Elfman's score was superb.
I really just can't or do get excited about movies anymore. I'm not a big Superhero Movie fan. Just more of the same noise and buildings being destroyed over and over and over again.
Saw JURASSIC WORLD and all that did was make me remember how awesome the Original JURASSIC PARK was in 1993 the same year SCHINDLER'S LIST came out. Movies and movie music used to be so freeken great.
It's all so gone for me.
Only soundtracks I look forward to these days are stuff that was never released from the past.
Amazes me how the audiences today buy this SHIT at the Theaters. Truly.
Sorry, I'm just an old man who really misses Jerry and Elmer and John and Basil and now James.
I am looking forward to seeing THE 33 and hearing Horner's guitar and pan flute score and I guess I'll see that STAR WARS thing for Johnny, but I hated what J.J. did with STAR TREK.
Off to watch some GOMER PYLE and THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW!
Off to watch some GOMER PYLE and THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW!
To each their own and all that, but those shows*--particularly Gomer Pyle, USMC--are enough to send even cynical old me screaming into the Zack Snyder/Christopher Nolan-tinted distance.
Not everything from the past was glorious and pure and perfect and not everything today falls into the "pretentious artistic claptrap" and/or "mass-produced junk food for the swinish multitudes" categories, ya know.
*Except when Don Knotts was in the show. He was a f_cking comedic genius.
Oh, and just to cheer you up, there is a Batman '66 comic book. New stories but with the look of the old series.
"Put on your go-go boots and get ready to “Batusi” back to the Swingin’ 60s as DC Comics reimagines the classic Batman TV series in comics form for the first time! These all-new stories portray The Caped Crusader, The Boy Wonder and their fiendish rogues gallery just the way viewers remember them. In this first adventure, The Riddler’s out to steal some valuable artwork from under the noses of Gotham’s police. But Batman gets help from an unlikely source: a certain femme fatale dressed in feline finery!"
But for me it's mostly pretty bleak out there. I'll always have hope and pray for someone, anyone, to be inspired to bring us something new and exciting and just different.
It all basically went to crap when Andrew McCarthy stopped making movies.
