Re: Joanna has been released on DVD/Bluray

I almost jumped out of my chair when I read what you wrote!!! I immediately went to the link -- Amazon in Britain? -- and will, of course, buy it, although I'm not sure about the compatibility with American players. But available in Blu-ray??? I can't believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

I'm back ... I went to my American Amazon where it was, with shipping, about $65, more than $70 with tax in my state, far far more than it's going for in the UK. But apparently it is Region 2, which is incompatible with American players. Darn!!!

And now I'm back again. I went to cnet.com to search for all region Blu-ray players, and they had several links, including www.world-import.com/Region-Free-Sale and others, and I was surprised that most of them had features I need, like Netflix and U.S.TV compatibility, so maybe that'll be my next move ... not just for "Joanna," but it IS a factor!

Soundtrack Collector has some misinformation regarding the 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. LPs of THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE. The site has a track listing for the Fox LP that shows 12 tracks running 33:45. There is no track listing for two Warner Bros. LPs. There is also a British soundtrack release on the EMI Stateside label, showing 19 tracks with no timings.

The fact of the matter is that the U.S. Fox LP has the same 19 tracks as the British EMI Stateside LP. Those 19 tracks run 42:47. The 12-tracks erroneously listed for the Fox LP actually are the tracks on one of the Warner Bros. LPs. As near as I can sort out the various LP versions, they are as follows:

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Words and Music by Rod McKuen
Arranged and Conducted by Arthur Greenslade
Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, November 1968
20th Century Fox Records, S4207
19 Tracks, 42:47

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
(Same as Fox LP)
EMI Stateside Records, SSL 10278
19 Tracks 42:47

Original Motion Picture Score
Words and Music by Rod McKuen
The Cinema Sound Stage Orchestra, conducted by Eddie Karam
Warner Bros. - Seven Arts Records, WS-1787
15 Tracks, Timing unknown

Original Score Composed and Conducted by Rod McKuen
Stanyan / Warner Bros. Records, WS-1853
12 Tracks, 33:45

So, it appears as if there are three performances of the score, by three different conductors. The fact that the original tracks were recorded at the now defunct Olympic Studios in London does not bode well for their preservation.

the overture track of this score was a bonus on the stanyan version of steiners "gone with the wind"
( 5: 46 min)
andy

The overture was not part of the original score and does not appear on the Fox soundtrack LP. The overture was specially prepared for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and was played when the film was selected for The Royal Film Performance of 1969. The overture appears on both of the Warner Bros. LPs.

You're welcome, Ron!

Flipside is a series of DVD/Blu ray releases by the British Film Institute of pretty obscure British films They often get an initial showing on the big screen at the National Film Theatre in London.

I just edited something I had posted on page 2 of this thread, that I had been wrong that my CD of the "Joanna" soundtrack WASN'T a Japanese import -- I hadn't looked at the 16-page booklet that comes with it in years and had forgotten that more than half of the text appears to be in Japanese. I want to thank Peter Greenhill for all his great postings on this subject ... and others!!!!!!

Rod McKuen gets his own stand-alone credit at the end of this trailer.

Reminded of the film, which I had recently revisited, and now having the opportunity of hearing the album again -- thanks -- I was about to pose a question when I realized that it was already up there -- from 2002! The problem, to my mind, remains: What on earth does this mildly pleasant, somewhat Muzaky tune have to do with the hard-edged satire of the movie? I grant that the filmmakers -- or was it the playwright Zoe Caldwell? -- softened Muriel Spark's story considerably. But even in this telling Miss Brodie remains a formidable monstre sacre with a lot more to her complicated character than simple sentiment. From the song lyrics, I get the sense that the composers were trying to focus on the "love story," or the unrequited passion of the Robert Stephens character. But surely that is a side issue. Well, it's not the first time that "Love Theme from" has taken over a soundtrack. It usually happens for commercial rather than artistic reasons. I have to assume the same logic was operating here.

Re: The trailer for "Brodie"

Bob: Oh, thank you SO much for that! How delightful! I've long had the movie on DVD, but haven't played it in years, so it was such a pleasure watching that! Although we don't see her in the trailer, it made me think of Jane Connell, I think, who played Mary McGregor, the idealistic moth chasing the flame. It made me think of "Love And Pain And The Whole Damn Thing" starring Maggie Smith and Timothy Bottoms -- which is probably my favorite Maggie Smith film. Again, thanks for this great trailer for "Brodie" -- it made me want to put the movie on NOW! Jane C had a very memorable role in Hal Prince's film "Something For Everyone" starring Angela Lansbury and Michael York, which, a crime, has YET to be released on DVD! (Broke down and bought it on VHS a couple of years ago!)

Well, a similar question could be asked about a song about raindrops falling on heads, which beat out "Jean" for the Oscar -- it was improbably out of place, but seemed to work.

It's a good comparison. I was one of those who cringed at "Raindrops," but obviously millions of others disagreed. George Roy Hill was known for his musical sensibility. Perhaps he knew what he was doing. Of course BUTCH CASSIDY was something of a comedy (at least for the first half), and the love story was near to the heart of the matter. I don't think you could make either claim for JEAN BRODIE.

Kenneth influenced Maggie, who influenced Robert.

My god, that's depressing.

It's put the kibosh on Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes - "Ooh Watson, stop messin' about".

God...

With the sad news of Rod McKeun's passing today, I've bumped this thread about the lack of a CD of Rod's Jean Brodie score. Would make an appropriate tribute to a great composer, poet and performer.

Sadly, there has never been a U.S. CD of any of McKuen's film scores. The fact that the recent Twilight Time Blu-ray release of THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE had an isolated music and effects track rather than a straight music track does not bode well for the existence of the original music tracks. The best hope is that Universal Music Group has the 20th Century Fox LP master.

Plenty of fans indeed. Thank you for resurrecting this thread. As in so many others I see a thread title, find that it's an oldie, wonder if I said anything, find my responses, look at the date(s) and laugh that what I stated then is what I would state today 17 years later. Only I said it better back then compared to what my brain-depleted self would say today!
