This is old news to some, but I was pleasantly surprised to find two Astrud Gilberto vocals on the recent CD release of LE CASSE (THE BURGLARS). I had the LP for many years but it did not have these cues. European fans probably were more aware of this than those of us in the US, as I understand there were 45 releases of these songs. I was really excited to hear this collaboration between one of my favorite film composers and Ms. Gilberto

I have always been a fan of Astrud and after getting this CD I went back and reviewed some of her songs. I am more convinced than ever she has perhaps one of the most beautiful and downright sexy voices in pop/jazz music. I don't know if it's her breathy delivery or the timbre of her voice or maybe the Brazilian accent, but whatever it is it works magnificently. After a little internet research, I also found that she actually had live performance in two films. In both cases it was her enduring hit "The Girl From Ipanema". The films were GET YOURSELF A COLLEGE GIRL (1964) and THE HANGED MAN (1964)

The song in in the former can be seen here:

Astrud's appearance in the 1964 Don Siegel directed TV movie begins at 24:48

I love both the songs in LE CASSE. I love the wistful way in she sings the lines "e la sooo" (i think thats how it goes). Definitely a fine singer.

I loves this too
Great writing and arrangement
but to be honest was a tad disappointed by her performance - quite a few points were the pitch is off and her control could be better
Somehow I feel the maestro could insist on a better take

...quite a few points were the pitch is off and her control could be better...

This. Astrud was not a trained singer, and launched her career as a vocalist quite accidentally when she sang the English lyrics to "Girl from Ipanema" for husband Joao during the sessions for Getz and Gilberto.

That said, as a singer, I think she simultaneously conveyed a sexiness and innocence. I love her records, but there are several occasions where auto-tune could have been applied, if it had existed.
