Details:
THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS
Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 327

Composer Jerry Goldsmith was 36 when he composed the music for the 1966 Columbia film The Trouble with Angels, coming after his score to A Patch of Blue and right before The Blue Max. He had not scored many comedies to that point, but still had come into a voice of his own. He chose to compose music that acknowledged the girls’ cartoonish antics as well as their rock ’n’ roll era, but tied it all together with a versatile theme, containing an emotional sensitivity that matches the film’s sincere heart.

This release mark's the premiere appearance of the stereo soundtrack from the original first-generation LP masters, presenting a striking clarity as heard on Intrada's previous release, The Elmer Bernstein AVA Collection. In addition, Sony Pictures provided the complete mono session elements, allowing Intrada to also present the entire score in mono, which includes several key musical sequences not included on the original LP.

The film was adapted from the 1962 novel Life With Mother Superior, written by New York advertising queen Jane Trahey and based on her own experiences attending a Catholic all-girls school in Chicago. Starring Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior, The Trouble with Angels opens with Mary (Hayley Mills) reluctantly arriving at St. Francis Academy for Girls. On the train she meets fellow classmate Rachel (June Harding), and suggests her first of many “scathingly brilliant ideas." For the next four years, Mary tests the patience of Mother Superior: smoking cigarettes, complaining, putting dish soap in the nuns’ tea, giving tours of the off-limits cloister, and plenty of other miscreant mischief. Gradually, though, Mary’s heart begins to soften.

Love Goldsmith's passionate writing in this score and the welcome addition of the cue "Farewell Sister Ligouri" is a piece of music by the maestro that truly effected me when I first saw the movie as a kid. He, if I may use a Hornerism, truly "nailed it" in that scene with her coffin and the dramatic camera move. The cue "Silent Sunday" and "Sad Sunday" also was pure "heartfelt" Goldsmith. Sweetness that was truly passionate without going over the top. He captured the loneliness of being a nun and the church feeling so awesomely.

Great release INTRADA, Kudos to you and this one is definitely a Zooba buy!

I remember paying $35.00 for a used Stereo LP of the Original album at BIG AL'S RECORD BARN in San Jose California where I grew up loving soundtracks. BIG AL'S was so overpriced for me back in the 70's and 80's, but I wanted this album so much that I just worked a little overtime and splurged.

Always good to have 60s scores, though I wish other composers had the same treatment.

It's always satisfying to see a Zooby Snack thrown your way.

Sounds like a mix of "Sebastian" and "Ace Eli and Roger of the skies". Since I really love those two, it might be worth picking up this one.
They did love their rattle thingy sound to point out "zany antics" by the way.

Wonderful release! The film has its moments but the score is downright sublime at times.

Thanks Intrada!

Sublime music indeed! The old CD was once a prized possession of mine, regardless of its less than pristine sound quality. To have the album now taken from a first generation source is sheer joy. That it comes supplemented with the entire score taken from the original recording sessions is the kind of miraculous treat labels such as Intrada keep spoiling us with. Heartfelt kudos to all involved with this heavenly release.

I had the same reaction! I've been patient for DECADES, and now here it is, the complete score! If you're a Goldsmith fan and don't have this, get it! It is alternately wistful, nostalgic, warm and tender, jolly and light of heart; not a typical Goldsmith film or score, but one of his best.

From the day I saw the film in the cinema this wonderful Goldsmith score has remained one of my top favourites. I'm so thrilled to see it being released now and getting the full Intrada 'treatment'! Thanks Intrada!

Always loved the finale with the train Goodbyes and how Goldsmith's train music really made feel the movement of the train with his super "train" rhythms that he always captured so well. Great scoring on his part. The man always made ANY movie better than it was. TRULY.

Just like James Horner. They were true Masters.

****SPOILER AHEAD. DON'T VIEW SCENE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED****

Here's the Sister Liguori scene that always touched me so much. Wish the guy would have left the music play out and didn't cut it so abrubtly at the end. Sucks that he did that.

Spectacular release! This score never sounded better (it never sounded that great on any previous incarnation). Not only is the stereo album master clean and clear, but the complete mono tracks (!!!) have a rich and warm sound. I've loved this score ever since I saw the movie in the theatrical release. Curiously, (or maybe not) all my favorite Goldsmith scores are from films I first saw in theaters: THE BLUE MAX, THE SAND PEBBLES, SECONDS, PLANET OF THE APES, THE OMEN, ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, THE WIND AND THE LION. What a rich and varied repertoire!

Finally got around to picking this up - absolutely brilliant release. I've had the terrible Mainstream CD since forever, but this score had never really made an impression. What a difference this new mastering, plus the complete tracks (which also sound great) make! Discovering new Goldsmith music from this era is a rare pleasure.
