I love this book, but I stayed away from the film, despite largely positive reviews, because Danny DeVito seems so wrong as the Michael Weir character.

Has anyone here both read the book and seen the film, and if so, how did you feel about DeVito in this role, or about the film in general?

Both book and film are great. The movie moves more into comedy territory, but keeps the sly/dry feel of Leonard's book. The script by Scott Frank stays true to Elmore Leonard, he gets that Leonard attitude, and also did a good adaptation of Out Of Sight. DeVito is not the Weir character of the book, if I remember, in the book Weir was younger, more of a matinee idol type. But in the film, DeVito's take works like a charm.

Lots of the dialogue is dead on. If you enjoyed the book, you'll like the movie. The changes made all work. The same can't be said of the sequel, Be Cool, however.

Go for it, watch the movie.

Thanks, I guess I should Netflix the film one of these days. I will avoid the sequel though.
