With the recent passing of our dear Maestro Horner, I've been thinking of how many great composers we have lost in the passed years. I got into film music around 1968 when I was 11 years old. Even though my topic says "last 25 years", my list begins in 1970 with Alfred Newman followed 5 years later with the passing of Bernard Herrmann. I know that before these years and since, up to 1991 with the passing of Alex North, we have lost many many more and their absence here is in no way meant to diminish their wonderful talents and memories. My list contains the composers that I personally got to know by collecting their works and who were the biggest influences to me in my discovery and love for film music. Here we go. It's staggering. For those listed here and those unlisted, may they all truly Rest in Peace. I am so grateful to them for all of their wonderful wonderful music. Treasures forever for us to celebrate and enjoy! In Memoriam Film Composers 1. Alfred Newman Mar 17, 1900 - Feb 17, 1970 2. Bernard Herrmann June 29, 1911 - Dec 24, 1975 3. Alex North Dec 4,1910 - Sept 8, 1991 4. Georges Delerue Mar 12, 1925 - Mar 20, 1992 5. Henry Mancini Apr 16, 1924 - June 14, 1994 6. Miklos Rozsa April 18, 1907 - July 27, 1995 7. Ernest Gold July 13, 1921 - Mar 17, 1999 8. Michael Kamen Apr 15, 1948 - Nov 18, 2003 9. Michael Small May 30, 1939 - Nov 24, 2003 10. Jerry Goldsmith Feb 10, 1929 - July 21, 2004 11. David Raksin Aug 4, 1912 - August 9, 2004 12. Elmer Bernstein Apr 4, 1922 - August 18, 2004 13. Basil Poledouris Aug 21, 1945 - Nov. 8, 2006 14. Shirley Walker Apr 10, 1945 - Nov. 30, 2006 15. Maurice Jarre Sept 13, 1924 - Mar 28, 2009 16. John Barry Nov 3, 1933 - Jan 30, 2011 17. Marvin Hamlisch June 2, 1944 - Aug 6, 2012 18. James Horner Aug 14, 1953 - June 22, 2015

Yeah, I was thinking that the last 10 years were especially bad, but I did not want to do the work that you did. I was slightly off, since 2003 the most of those passed, so about 12 years. Horner listening got me thinking on Kamen and Basil, and of course Jerry. Kamen and Basil had a whole lot of work left in them, so much music not done. I recall when Jerry passed, it was like my world ended. Jerry and those scores, since I was a kid, those were much of what I was, what I am. Thanks Zooba. Oh, to end positive, while I sobbed though some Horner the other night, I popped in my Iron Will score, and wow, what a great composer Joel McNeely was at such a young age, he still is great. Iron Will is such a powerful and hopeful score, what a work. It made me feel a lot better that we still have great guys like McNeely.

I would also add: Max Steiner: May 19, 1888 - December 28, 1971. Steiner was the FATHER OF FILM MUSIC and without him, where would the art form be today? Dimitri Tiomkin: May 10, 1894 – November 11, 1979. Showed Americans how to score westerns. Hugo Friedhofer: May 3, 1908 - May 17, 1981. Another Golden Age composer who needs more respect from the younger generation. GIL MELLE: December 31, 1931 – October 28, 2004. Where would electronic and orchestral synthesis be today without him?
