It seems this was the last year that many Movie Soundtracks were issued on Vinyl LP Albums.

Anyone here own Horner's GLORY, FIELD OF DREAMS and DAD on LP Album?

I do have the LP versions of FOD and DAD and remember seeing the album for GLORY at Bernie's Disc Connection on Pico back in the day and opting to get the CD which was also there. But I may have grabbed the LP as well. Can't remember. However the LP Album is quite Rare to find these days and sells for high prices on ebay.

I do have a lot of James Horner LP Albums which I started collecting with his STAR TREK II THE WRATH OF KHAN.

Which and how many James Horner LP Soundtrack Albums do you have?

Nice idea for a topic. I'm a Horner fan and collector, and into vinyl, so whenever I could (a couple a year) I'd acquire the vinyl releases of his stuff. I have a modest vinyl collection and dedicated turntable "corner" and it's a fun format to enjoy his work on, the larger art and tactile experience being a nice antithesis to CD or digital formats. They all have their place, in my mind. Specific to 1989 in your question, I do have that audiophile 180 gram vinyl of "Glory" (and a "test pressing" of it) and "Field of Dreams", but never got around to "Dad".

It's difficult to find Horner vinyl for his films into the 90s, for sure, as the format was disappearing and this was before any resurgance . Sometimes it was pressed only in one country. Chronologically, Horner's 90's projects I have vinyl releases for would be "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" (1991), "Patriot Games" (1992) and "Swing Kids" (1993).

Inspired by your post I took a few pictures from my collection - representing some different years, the artwork is either cool, striking/minimalist or a little alternate from a regular release:

"Aliens" (German Colosseum release)

"An American Tail"

"An American Tail: Fievel Goes West"

"Another 48 Hrs"

"Aliens" (Japanese release)

"Batteries Not Included"

"Battle Beyond The Stars"

"Brainstorm" (Milan release)

"Brainstorm" (Japanese release)

"Brainstorm" (German TER release, actually my favorite cover art concept):

"Cocoon: The Return"

"Gorky Park" (German TER release)

"Humanoids From The Deep"

"Patriot Games"

"Swing Kids"

"Where The River Runs Black"

Award for "Trekfan's least liked Horner vinyl cover" - this design of "Krull". I get that the left/right red bands are to preserve the aspect ratio of the "poster" on front, but...comes across as cheesy and lazy:

This release concept is simpler and better, in my view:

That's fantastic, Trekfan. I can't wait to get home and see the pics, which are blocked by the firewall here at my workplace.

I have the 1982 LP of THE WRATH OF KHAN. It's pretty close to mint condition too, because in those days I would play an LP once to record a cassette, and then play the hell out of the cassette. It kept my vinyl nice.

Dig that TER Gorky Park sleeve. And the Krull cover remains my favorite to this day.

Thanks for sharing those great photos of your LP Horner Collection trekfan!

I loved old Soundtrack LPs. I remember vowing when CD's came out that I would never cross over.

Yah that lasted until they stopped making LPs.

Long Live James Horner!

Thanks everyone for the words. ZapBrannigan, I think it's you that takes pictures of your "Star Trek" CD collection every few months (or whenever the photo needs updating) placed out on a table or whatever, and posts it into threads here? So these photos were loosely inspired by your doing that.

Most of these I picked up inexpensively here and there over the years. If anyone is looking to add some Horner vinyl to their collection, I've found discogs.com has been a source with often low, non-premium prices from various retailers in different parts of the world - from an artist listing by Horner ( http://www.discogs.com/artist/39575-James-Horner ) you can jump to the marketplace and filter by format to get just the vinyl listings. GEMM.com is the same concept. Amazon sellers also. And eBay too of course, for "back catalog" or cutout titles where the seller isn't charging an arm and a leg, but in my experience the same item will often be cheaper on discogs so eBay might be a lesser resort. If anyone has any favorite online vinyl marketplace haunts, let us know here.

I posted over here ( http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110656&forumID=1&archive=0 ) that a vinyl "Aliens" is on the horizon from Mondo. There is also an "Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) apparently coming in August to vinyl for the first time (that had been arranged before this recent tragedy, as I understand it): http://www.elusivedisc.com/James-Horner-The-Amazing-Spiderman-Soundtrack-2LP/productinfo/SL9LP20181/ . I understand these kind of "premium", current-day vinyl releases aren't for everyone. Actually I'm not sure yet I would be buying either.

Advise & Consent, yes, that "Gorky Park" TER release is visually striking. The original Varese issue had black bars at top/bottom, this carried over with some slight variations to the later Kritzerland and then Intrada releases, but placing it in an entire open white space was more dramatic I think:

L to R releases: Varese (1983), Kritzerland (2011), Intrada (2014), TER (1983)

A few more as I dipped into the 45 RPM's (7" singles) section of my collection:

"Somewhere Out There" from "An American Tail" - two different releases:

"Field of Dreams" promo:

"Star Trek 2" single promo:

"Star Trek 2" single retail:

"Star Trek 3" single retail:

And moving away from the 45's, this is an interesting album, the French version of "The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper":

That's right, thanks for remembering. And I love seeing other guys' pictures as well. Which is why it's so frustrating to be stuck at work tonight where the pictures are blocked.

Very nice LP pictures.
I have almost all of them too, plus some other like Cocoon, ST II & III, another alternate cover Aliens, Field of Dreams, Der Name Der Rose, Red Heat, Willow.
But I am not buying vinyl anymore, so I am not looking for what I still don't have (like Fievel Goes West LP and Glory LP) or any Mondo release either.

All my old LP's are in a big metal cabinet in the garage (I do still grab the odd one either still not available on CD - or I just never upgraded - and give it a spin).
I have every Horner LP until sometime between 1986 to 88 when I moved onto CD (I have that French DB Cooper one with the two Horner tracks).
BBTS, ST2, Krull, Brainstorm, Gorky Park and Cocoon were hit pretty hard..and often.
Fond Memories! Good Times!

I have the willow cd. But I always wondered how the 75 minute program was able to fit on a single lp. Perhaps it was edited? Can someone explain.

Yeah, it's interesting. That much music can fit on a vinyl LP (and "Willow" is a single vinyl disc), but the vinyl pressing master has to be cut with tighter spacing between the grooves which can hurt the fidelity. This section of this article (see "Exceptions") is interesting on that:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LP_record#Playing_time

I don't think "Willow" is a particularly strong sounding piece of vinyl - this was a good "poster child" for advantages of the CD format - but it's not terrible.

There was an old article from the 80s that I had ran across once, about Horner, with an offhand reference made to "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" and its running time (this is before the FSM CD reissue, of course) not including more original music at the time of its release because of Horner's concerns with reducing the fidelity of the vinyl the more music that was added.

Yes. The TER definitely paints a picture. Thanks for the collage.

And the David Stoner liner notes were a nice bonus:

I kept my vinyl in first rate condition, but they never sounded very good, with all the pops, ticks etc they were horrendous sounding. I dumped all my LP"s years ago with no regret.

Nice LP Collection. Maybe even Thor thinks they look better than digital downloads?
