It was announced through a USA Today story that the Mondo label - specializing in deluxe vinyl releases of scores - will be issuing one for Horner's "Aliens" upcoming. Good news for vinyl buffs or collectors of these particular deluxe issues (for their stunning artwork for instance). The two that I have of theirs previous are their Goldsmith issues ("Poltergeist" and "The Omen").

From http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2015/06/30/alien-ant-man-mondo-comic-con-exclusives/29524363/ :

Aliens soundtrack ($35). This one's special for fans of the late Oscar-winning composer James Horner, who died last week in a plane crash: A vinyl soundtrack of his score for James Cameron's 1986 sci-fi flick Aliens. The deluxe edition features more than a dozen musical cues new to vinyl plus five bonus tracks, and a cover design by artist Killian Eng. "I wanted the alien to play a big role," he said, "but at the same time incorporate its shape into the materials of the space station, almost like it becomes the station itself, keeping the marines in a steady merciless grip."

If they use the Varese Deluxe as a source like the Blu-ray did, then "Ripley's Rescue" will still be the altered percussion overlay version instead of the original mix, which would be a shame.

I guess he means the colonists' dwellings on the planet, as it's not a space station. The soldiers look abit generic rather than the ragtag space marines, but maybe it's just the low rez image.

Or, you know, people who enjoy buying their favorite scores on any format possible. So, if liking film scores and buying them on vinyl makes you a "hipster" then I guess we need to be changing the title of this website forum to "Film Score Hipster Monthly."

The usual Mondo profiteering off the nerd squads, no reason for it at all. There are more than adequate releases of Aliens on CD. The LP does not serve any purpose, other than a tool to sell the artwork.

Maybe Varese should have a "CD to LP Subscription Club." wink

That Varese deluxe version of "Ripley's Rescue" is such a turn-off that I replaced it with the original album mix of it and never looked back since. To be blunt, their remix of that cue plain stinks.

What's the difference between them? I never actually noticed.

Yeah, I never knew the cue was altered from the original, they just tacked on the perc-only tracks onto the end, like the boot.

For the Deluxe Edition, they took the "Percussion Only" version of 'Ripley's Rescue' and overlayed it on top of the original cue, but the snare drums aren't timed right so the distinct drum pattern becomes a mess throughout the cue. In addition, the percussion is now overpowering much of the orchestra.

It's clear, listening to the original cue from the 1987 OST, and comparing it to the percussion-only version that they were two separate recordings, not just an extraction of the percussion from the mix of the orchestra, just like 'Combat Drop'.

Here's an mp3 sample, where the original OST is presented first, and the 2001 Deluxe is second.

It's not the entire cue, just a segment. You will hear the drum pattern more distinctly and is balanced with the orchestra in the original, but the deluxe is...not. They took the deluxe version and used it for the isolated score Blu-ray tracks, which were re-creations.

If you never heard the original version you wouldn't notice it wasn't meant to be that way, despite the fact that all the other cues don't have such overpowering percussion in them, making that cue on the deluxe stick out.

Wow, I don't know...how did I never notice this before? I'll have to check my copies out when I get home, I guess.
