Interestingly, 20tH Century-Fox Home Entertainment just released "Aliens" on Blu ray with both the general release version and the Director's Cut with more footage. Both versions are on the same Blu ray with a score by Horner (this Blu ray was put out shortly before his death). Comments?
It's been out for a long, long time, and the isolated score is fun to listen to ("Combat Drop" synced to the film is just great, though I agree with Cameron's final wishes...moshtly).
This release is problably a rerelease as Aliens was released for the first time on Blu-ray in 2010. That release also included two versions of the movie and you can watch the theatrical version with two versions of Horner's score: one as heard in the film and one as written for the film.

What versions are available commercially on CD? I assume the original OST was an album presentation. (with a lot of music missing) Then there's the Deluxe edition. Is that the complete score as heard in the film, or the original scores as he wrote it before it got chopped up?

It isn't complete as it's missing one cue that wasn't by Horner (also some Goldsmith got tracked in from the first one), but it basically has all of Horner's material as he intended it for the picture and even more (some percussion only tracks).
This is the piece that's missing by Harry Rabinowitz:

Cool, thxs! I wasn't really aware there were so many versions of this score.

I tried Googling this but couldn't find any more information. The Blu-ray clearly has two different versions of the isolated score, but can you actually watch the film with Horner's unedited score?

Yes, one track represents the score as Horner intended when he wrote it, the other is what ended up in the film.

Awesome thanks for the info, I'll look forward to checking this out.
But can you watch the film with dialogue and SFX etc. with the alternate Horner score? Or is it just that, only the (isolated) score?
Only isolated. So just the music playing. I too would like to see rejected scores being part of an alternate audio mix as a bonus, but this would be too costly to produce plus I doubt the filmmakers would want to have that available.

The only time that springs to mind that this was done was the laserdisc release of Benny & Joon, which included the soundtrack with an alternate score.

The Special Edition DVD of Battle of Britain has an option to watch the film with the William Walton score or the Ron Goodwin score.
