While we are all buzzing about Intrada's release of Dominic Frontiere's THE AVIATOR, I mention that Warner Bros. recently brought out a Blu-ray edition of the serviceable, if pedestrian John Wayne - Ann Margaret horse opera, THE TRAIN ROBBERS from 1972. The film features another little-heard score by Dominic Frontiere.

It's classic "big sky" cowboy music, of course, and there is a LOT of it (maybe too much, as many minutes of the movie are given over to Wayne and his compadres riding and riding and riding out into the Mexican desert, then riding and riding and riding back again, all of these minutes underscored Bernstein style). I thought it was fun listening to an engaging western score not by Elmer B., Goldsmith, Moross, Tiomkin, or Jarre.

Anybody else out there interested in hearing this one unearthed from the vaults? It appears the topic last came up here in 2007.

Yeah one of many 70s westerns with decent scores.
Bit like undefeated - not by a big name but would sell because its good.
Plenty more gagging for a release from Shoot out to valdez to ulzana to willie Boy to spikes gang etc etc.

One of my favourite western scores. Just a fantastic theme as well as a strong secondary one for the bad guys. Great shame the score appears to be lost.

The film score is NOT lost.................The composer has the full score in his collection ............and therefore could be released at anytime..........I do have a private copy in my collection and the sound quality is brilliant and in stereo.....

That is terrific news. Will be on the lookout for a "complete score" CD.

I have mentioned on threads here before (especially on those "holy grail" threads) that I would love to see a CD of Frontiere's "John Wayne Western" scores: "Chisum" and "The Train Robbers" together on one CD. All I have ever heard is that "the tapes are lost"....which I always thought was a load of baloney.......Speaking of WB Westerns I would also love to see Alfred Newman's final Western "Firecreek" released........Maybe one day.....

I agree, I'd love to see both CHISUM and THE TRAIN ROBBERS on CDs, especially CHISUM.

I wouldn't count on any help from Varese, but these two scores would be right up the line for Intrada, LLL and Kritzerland. Perhaps Mr. Frontiere has the tapes to BOTH scores?

I've long asked about Alfred Newman's FIRE CREEK. I'm surprised no label has done this yet as well as Newman's NEVADA SMITH.

There are suites of The Train Robbers and Chisum on a 2 CD set from Edel called Best of the West. But I also would love to see these two scores released.

There is another John Wayne film score most wanted besides THE TRAIN ROBBERS AND CHISUM.
Not by Frontiere however. I am talking about Rosenthal's ROOSTER COGBURN.

Here are a few score excerpts compiled into a 7-minute suite on Youtube, ripped from the film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu9JLb3UkH8

The beginning (and overall chordal progressions of the main theme) sound uncannily like Bruce Broughton's main theme from Silverado. It's a lot of fun for sure and I'd also pick this up.

Very excited to receive Frontiere's THE AVIATOR. It sounds fantastic. Never heard a note of this composers' work prior to the announcement of The Aviator, so I'm excited to dive into his work!
