And I know Thor did a wonderful interview with him. In a past post I shared my experience meeting the Maestro when I was working as an extra on SEINFELD and he was recording THE SPITFIRE GRILL at Todd-AO Scoring Stage on the same studio lot, CBS RADFORD. I'll try to track it down and re-share. He was simply wonderful and invited me "In for a listen" as he put it, to the session. A true gentleman and so kind and soft spoken. Having trouble finding it though. Thought it was in a "Composers you have met" Thread, but can't find it. So please, if anyone else was lucky to have met James, I would love to hear about your experience. Only wished I had a camera with me. Would have loved to have had a photo taken with him. I feel joy that I did shake his hand and tell him how much his music had meant to me and thanked him for it. He was sincerely appreciative. The photo below I don't think is from the session I was at, but it is exactly how I remember watching James Horner conduct the music from THE SPITFIRE GRILL. How lucky was I to have had the experience? A very great memory for me! Just remembering his kindness and graciousness in inviting me, a total stranger to him, "In for a listen". Thank you James. Rest in Comfort and Peace. The piece of music he was focusing on and recording when I was at the SPITFIRE Session was "Remembering Eli". I remember they did take after take, maybe doing it 6 or 7 times. He wanted to get it just right. Amazing to see him work and his rapport with the orchestra was wonderful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7caYamWct_A&index=6&list=PLD3205CF36EBF4891

I just read this at Variety.com about SPITFIRE GRILL: The indie producer-exec Jonathan Dana, also on Facebook, recalled Horner’s gracious contribution to the 1996 Sundance entry “Spitfire Grill.” “He came to the rescue and did the score for ‘Spitfire Grill’ totally on spec, giving all the money to the 70 local union musicians who performed his magnificent music,” Dana wrote. “He was amazing to watch work, conducing the orchestra without a ‘click track,’ and making modifications to the score, as needed, on the spot! Could not have been more gracious or inclusive, and was more thrilled than anyone at the success of the film and its Sundance Audience Award.”

As I posted elsewhere, The Spitfire Grill is one of my two favorite Horner scores... I wish I could've been there to hear him record it!

I was never in a position to meet him in person (or any other comoser). But for some reason I just assumed he'd live to an old ripe age and that maybe one day I could. Or that maybe one day I'd be near a concert or out in Hollywood (visiting a family member) and try to sneak a chance. I've been ofered something like three to five chances to attend sessions to scores but I'm on the other side of the country and don't have the money to go do it so I have to politely decline each time.

I met him very briefly at the end of the BAFTA Guru conversation with Tommy Pearson on 29th April this year at the Royal Albert Hall, the Wednesday after the Titanic Live concert on the Monday. I was last in the formidable queue of autograph hunters. I had held back as I didn't want to get in anyone else's way first, and I needed to keep my troublesome back at bay by sitting down. I wasn't after an autograph, all I wanted to do was shake his hand and thank him for his work, and 'Field of Dreams' in particular. I think I probably overstepped the mark a little before though, as I misinterpreted the intentions of the persons in the queue immediately in front of me, and I tried to be too helpful. It might very well have been seen as being invasive on someone else's moment with JH. It wasn't intended that way. Anyhow, I think both Tommy and James were pretty tired by the time I got to say hello to James, so I kept my thanks brief, though I think I ended up doing too much of the limited time of talking. I wish I could have been a bit calmer and less 'gushing', but that's just the way it happens with me sometimes. I am at least glad I got to meet James, and say thank you.
