I'm thinking of buying a Horner compilation album.

Which one is best?

I prefer his soft, melodic music, not the orchestral action stuff.

I don't know of any compilation that omits the action stuff.

Take your pick:

I recommend none of those, but the Varese seems OK and the Prague one at least includes The Man Without A Face, which you should definitely just purchase no matter what (along with that new Bobby Fischer, or even the original album of that).

I'd be interested in seeing that playlist.

Yes, this should be interesting. Perhaps a crowd-sourced playlist, specifically to First Breath's needs.

I'm rather fond of this one and not just because I work at Varese.

Did Silva Screen do a compilation or two of Horner, probably. Those are always great ones as well!

Didn't know about this one. Silva did a nice job.

I'd like to dole out some praise for "Heart of the Ocean". Fascinating cross-section of Horner's work. John Beal's re-creations of VIBES and COMMANDO are quite impressive.

The most recent from Silva :

Simply called The Music Of James Horner is current up to The Karate Kid and Avatar, so you have new and older recordings. Overall this one is solid and has some very nice track selections and performances.

It's a fun challenge if you have some extra time. Be aware of FB's preference for synths, especially in a melodic style, as well as the more lush, majestic themes or those with smaller ensembles. Avoid busy symphonic action tracks, as he says above. I'll think about it some more.

this is an interesting thing,
produced by Ford A. Thaxton BTW.

It combines re-recordings from other labels which were licenced for this thing.

And there are some tracks, like "The Rocketeer", which are performed Orchestra of the Americas conducted by Bill Broughton I think.
Never heard of that before and after that.

The performances and the mixing and mastering are rather not stellar.

Sure, thanks.

I am thinking of a CD though, and after having looked at the ones in this thread, I guess I may go for Heart Of The Ocean, even though it is quite old.

The "Orchestra of the Americas" were on Intersound in the early 90s. I want to say the orchestra was based out of Mexico. There were 5 or 6 CD's of various themes (westerns, sci fi, etc). They recorded a few things that Silva/Varese/Telarc did not do. A few were Shaiman's City Slickers and A Few Good Men and the end credits to Tombstone.

There was no issue with the mastering since it was done by James Nelson at DIGITAL OUTLAND.

That compilation was pulled together from a wide variety sources and recorded with different groups from all over the world it was bound to have somewhat different sound from track to track.

It was a very fun project to do and I think still gives a good overview of Horner's career at that time to the mainstream audience.

I should also mention that both the SILVA SCREEN and VARESE Horner Compilations are quite good as well and have a lot of strong points as well.

For those of us on Spotify, many (all?) of these compilations are available digitally - the Varese, Heart of the Ocean, the Silva two-disc set. I appreciate folks pointing these out, I've never listened to these before.

I got it at Best Buy in the early 2000s or 1999

Also bought this John Williams compilation on the same trip
