Dominic Frontiere

Date: 1985
Time: 1:15:13
Tracks: 35
First release of entire Dominic Frontiere soundtrack from George Miller
aviation adventure with Christopher Reeve, Rosanna Arquette, Jack
Warden, from book by Ernest K. Gann.

First release of entire Dominic Frontiere soundtrack from George Miller aviation adventure with Christopher Reeve, Rosanna Arquette, Jack Warden, from book by Ernest K. Gann. Reeve (a pilot in real life) stars as vintage U.S. mail flyer who pilots treacherous route, crashes while transporting daughter of wealthy banker who owns fleet of planes. Surviving the elements, packs of deadly wolves and each other forms basis for old-fashioned tale. Frontiere anchors with stirring main theme in grand major-key manner. Idea literally soars. Receiving near-equal attention is gorgeous, broadly-phrased love theme in three parts: first is sunny major-key melody, second is contrasting minor-tinged melody, third is reprise of initial idea. Throughout, richly-harmonized main theme never strays, keeps score on course. Frontiere balances melodic portions with sizzling, percussive action material for variety of survival scenes, wolf attacks. Intrada CD is significant: both original 1985 LP release and subsequent, slightly expanded CD version oddly omitted numerous percussion parts, recorded in separate sessions, to key action cues. Intrada presentation not only presents complete mixes for the first time, but also features plethora of never-before-released cues from the film as well as several alternates - 75 minutes of music in all, courtesy MGM. Attractive booklet design by Joe Sikoryak features informative liner notes by Tim Greiving. Jack Hayes, Herbert Spencer orchestrate, Dominic Frontiere conducts Munich Symphony Orchestra. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

THANK YOU, INTRADA! A most beautiful score that definitely deserves its own thread!

from book by Ernest K. Gann. Reeve (a pilot in real life)

several of his books (many about aviation) were made into films with notable composers:
Last Flight of Noah's Ark (Jarre)
Fate is the Hunter (Goldsmith)
High and the Mighty (Tiomkin)
Island in the Sky (Emil Newman; Friedhofer)
Blaze of Noon (Deutsch)
Soldier of Fortune (Friedhofer, although not about flying)

Sounds AWESOME. Why the hell is no one talking about this, but drooling over Adventures in Babysitting?

Maybe 'cause Kamen is bit more famous/popular than Frontiere (and that's sad - the samples sounds AMAZING!)?

Yup, even in a niche market like film score collecting, popular namesake reigns supreme.

I for one will be getting this. Sounds like the best kind of film music to me.

I can only purchase one release this week and this is my first choice, based on the samples. I knew nothing about the film or the composer but this release sounds amazing. Love this year for scores. Ordered!

Same. Never heard of him nor the film. I love pleasant surprises like this. Reminds me of Alfi Kabiljo's SKY BANDITS, which is perhaps the most underrated "flight"-associated score, ever.

Oh yes! Main title sounds great. I will never not order a DF score.

Rather a poignant coincidence on several levels considering today's news.

Glad to hear a little praise from you guys about Dominic Frontiere's "The Aviator".

I've been acquainted with Frontiere since January of 1980, when (at age 12) I began to watch reruns of THE OUTER LIMITS on UHF television. Frontiere's music for the 1st season of OL (1963/'64) has been burned into my mind for so long (most of my life) that I have difficulty accepting that folks can become fans of film & TV music without knowing anything about Frontiere. I feel that THE OUTER LIMITS should be mandatory viewing for all 12-year-olds. smile

Because of Frontiere's association with OL, I blind bought the Varese Sarabande LP of "The Aviator" in 1985 when it was a new release simply because it was done by Frontiere.

Now in 2015, "The Aviator" has its 2nd incarnation on CD thanks to Intrada. Sound samples are apparently the modus operandi for almost all customers to make purchasing decisions, but I'm one of those guys who won't even need to sample those sound bits on this release - I know I'm going to get this...

Never heard of this movie but enjoyed the samples enough to order a copy.

I'm familiar with this score because it was the B-side to Hang 'Em High's La-La land issue. While I bought the disc for Hang 'Em High, The Aviator quickly eclipsed the Western for me. I'm very much looking forward to getting this disc.

Sad to see not much discussion about this, overall. Slap "Goldsmith" on the cover, with the exact same musical content, and suddenly it's a piece of vaulting genius.

I wish the MUSIC were the selling point around here - Because if it were, surely this would be receiving far greater appreciation and discussion and excitement.

I already know I'm gonna love this one, off the samples and a Youtube excerpt alone.

Sounds like a must-have in this household. I'll be adding the title to my next order.

It is a shame that Frontiere doesn't register more on the FSM board.

One more: The Antagonists, made into Masada for TV (Goldsmith and Morton Stevens).

Haven't played all the previously-unreleased tracks yet, but I've done a side-by-side audition of a few tracks of the newly-arrived Intrada and my previous LLL version. Those who buy the new one should be very pleased with the sound improvement. The Intrada has a fuller, smoother sound, making the older one sound relatively thin when switching between the two.

Update: I've listened to it all now and it's an excellent release. The extra music and better sound has really boosted my appreciation of this score. Top marks!

The track "Sit With You" on the Intrada is called "Still With You"" on the LLL. Can someone confirm which is correct?

The Aviator arrived yesterday and I listened to it last night. Indeed, it is "a piece of vaulting genius". Aside from the quaint and period main theme and the exciting airborne cues there's plenty of Frontiere's trademark orchestration, ostinati and crescendi

Bump.

Because this is really a magnificent, old school-score that deserves any film score lover´s attention.

I'm loving this score. Nothing else I've begun to explore from this composer comes remotely close. That main theme!
