The guest in the next 'Desert Island Discs' is Harry Rabinowitz, whose long career as a conductor and composer included contributions to films and TV series like 'Reilly Ace of Spies', 'The English Patient', 'City of Angels' and 'The Talented Mr Ripley' (he frequently collaborated with director Anthony Minghella).

The programme airs in the UK on the 28th of June.

Now fixed, thanks, Thor... I'm sure I cut-and-pasted the name from the BBC website - perhaps it was they who made the error!

I'm impressed he's still alive at age 99!

He also did the replacement 'Combat Drop' drum piece for ALIENS.

Recordings I have showing his name as conductor, in addition to the aforementioned The English Patient (1996), are:

- Puppet on a Chain (1971)
- Hanover Street (1979)
- Death and the Maiden (1994)
- The Secret Agent (1996)
- Message in a Bottle (1999)

revealing a wide range of styles. If I remember to do so I shall tune in ... Many thanks for the notification.

Mitch

He also conducted FX, Murderers Among Us and Masters of the universe for Bill Conti.

Always wondered why Conti didn't conduct these scores himself.

I actually had a chance to interview him several years ago when he came to our university to do a concert. Of course I asked him about his involvement in film music and I remember he was particularly excited about a Gabriel Yared score he had just conducted for a film called L'arche et les déluges. Somewhere I still have a box of my old newspaper clippings and if I can find it I'll see if there were any other choice bits of information from the interview.
