One of my favourite Jerry Goldsmith scores.

"This is the heroic story of the men on the U.S.S. San Pablo who disturbed the sleeping dragon of savage China as the threatened world watched in breathless terror."

Youg gotta love that fabulous art, CH. The chinese calligraphy is especially pertinent. How does the red title symbology translate?

U.S.S. San Pablo .

Would that be a strictly linear (left to right) reading, or is there a method of interpretation going on there - just out of interest? All that calligraphy at the top and bottom is kinda mesmerizing, too.

Got to love the fact the McQueen wasn't just a pretty face in this movie. He really demonstrated some wonderful acting abilities in the movie.

THE SAND PEBBLES (a film I watch every year on the December anniversary of its release) and PAPILLON are McQueen's finest film acting -- and both scored by Jerry Goldsmith.

Agree, Rory. His name in the movie was Holman, and he was not a whole man in the beginning. At first he only really understood his beloved machines. Through love and insights into war, he does seem to become a whole man as the movie progresses. Ironically at the end he dies, and his body is draped over another machine. Brilliant movie.

SAND PEBBLES is one of my favorite Goldsmith scores, and also an excellent movie, a big-budget thoughtful film, the kind that just isn't made any more.

I saw this originally as a roadshow at the Rivoli Theatre in New York, now demolished. Finally, the "roadshow version" was released on video, but there's an additional website that purports to have even more footage, though, as I recall, the soundtrack is in German. Still, there seem to be a few extra scenes I don't recall from when I've seen this film in the past.

SAND PEBBLES also holds up well with repeated viewings.

I also saw Sand Pebbles at the Rivoli in its roadshow run. I'll never forget the death of the young man Holman was teaching to run the engine and the shattering subsequent cue, Death of 1000 Cuts, with the horns screaming Holman's anguish. I immediately ran out to buy the LP and wore it out. It's my favorite Goldsmith score. It's got everything: romance (2 love themes), action cues as well as everything in between.

I remember when this premiered on "The C.B.S. Sunday Night Movie", and it was televised in two parts.

BTW: The original souvenir program can frequently be found on e-bay for a reasonable price.

It's one of Robert Wise's best films. I would say he was the most versatile of directors, deftly tackling just about every film genre. The only other director who came close was Minnelli.

Did Minnelli ever direct an ancient historical spectacle? Don't think so. Wise did a most creditable job of directing HELEN OF TROY (1956).
