London, Friday 28 August 2015

A screening of Franklin J Schaffner's seminal film Planet of the Apes accompanied by a live soundtrack.

The BBC Concert Orchestra performs the score.

There'll be rioting in the aisles if they forget the mixing bowls!

Exciting!

My questions would be:

Will they have a Brazilian cuica drum?

Will they have a slide whistle?

Will they have mixing bowls?

Will they have a Shofar (ram's horn)?

And what's to be done with the few sections that were echoplexed?

I'd also wonder about the etiquette of applause when music ends while you're watching a movie lol.

In any case, I'm in! Ticket just arrived in my inbox. Seems like a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing.

I'm seriously thinking about it; this gets my vote for greatest film score ever written.

I'll be in the front row. To think that this will be the first time large portions of this score, outside of the concert suite, will have been performed since the original recording sessions (though the Australian Ballet Company did use it for a production of Othello in the 1970s).

Well the audience generally stays quiet and just enjoys the movie with the live music. I'd recommend any soundtrack fan to experience a movie screening this way, I had a great time at the last one I went to (Suspiria with live performance by Goblin) and it's great to hear the music played to the movie and getting to see the artists perform it live on stage. In the case of Planet of the Apes, where there are lengthy parts with no music, the anticipation will factor as well, especially if it's a movie you've seen a ton of times.

A nice addition to the evening just announced:

"Please note that there will now be a free pre-concert talk at 6.15pm.

Conductor Robert Ziegler and producer Tommy Pearson will discuss the daring, landmark score by Jerry Goldsmith for Planet of the Apes and its influence on film music and composers."

When I read the name Tommy Pearson I thought: I've heard that name before:
