A throwaway comment in another thread compelled me to dig this CD out.
Here are some things it reminds me of...

JAWS by John Williams (but not the obvious stuff from Jaws)
THE HAND by James Horner
DEEP RISING by Jerry Goldsmith (although written two years before that one)
DD's own Paracelsus stuff from BEAUTY & THE BEAST
PREDATOR by Alan Silvestri

Although overlong on CD, this is a pretty solid and enjoyable orchestral score by DD, which I pretty much dismissed AT THE TIME but now sounds, when compared to some of the current drivel, like a symphony of music and sound.
This and HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN* are two of his lesser known efforts that are maybe worth checking out.

Actually, I do remember quite a bit of positive buzz about this when it came out. I never saw the film myself, nor did I pick up the soundtrack (I only sampled it), but considering how silent Davis has been in the last few years, this is an example of what we're missing.

It's funny, I thought I was crazy but indeed the main title has definite chordal similarities to Horner's THE HAND - Glad someone else noticed this as well.

While perhaps overlong, this is a fine, fine thematic monster movie score.

Some excellent action cues and I love the way Davis takes the warm piano/english horn theme heard occasionally throughout and sends off his score with a big, surging and incredibly dramatic rendition of said theme at the end. Leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

Really solid work, glad to hear it mentioned.

I love this score. Play it often, never considered it overlong.

Same. Back in the day this was quiet a lengthy presentation of score, considering it was a Varese CD
Love the title theme. Wouldn't mind an alternate cover, anyone?

Always loved this score. The tv movie is watchable but based on the usual cliches, it is Benchley trying to replicate his own Jaws.
The music is the best thing in it.
If I remember correctly at the time the soundtrack was a poor seller, which is unjust since it is a very good soundtrack.

The movie is a lot closer to JAWS than the book, as I remember. Even if the book has another deus ex machina ending like the JAWS novel.

Missy Crider was the best thing in it.

The reason it was so long was due to the fact it was recorded in Utah with a NON-AFM Orchestra (No new usage payments).

Lots of good stuff in this one.

Ah, right. Forgot about that. Always why other Varese issues from this era, like Chris Gordon's ON THE BEACH & MOBY DICK or Robert Folk's LAWNMOWER MAN 2 were so much lengthier - None of those annoying LA cult fees.
