I suspect this is not news to a few of you on this board, but I also suspect a goodly number may not know about this. Especially since I think there is not much intersection between fans of Ennio Morricone and people who watch many animated films.
I caught THE BOOK OF LIFE on DVD and was pleasantly surprised to hear Ennio Morricone’s “The Ecstasy of Gold” appear in a bullfight scene in the film.. As noted in threads about the score, the music is by Gustavo Santaolalla. The Morricone piece is an arrangement by Santaolalla and not the original, but it works quite well in the film. It’s also properly credited.
I’m pretty indifferent to Santaolalla and was definitely one of those who felt his Oscar wins were stolen from better scores, but THE BOOK LIFE was enjoyable.
I at least have to give him credit for exquisite taste for using Morricone.
(If anyone has posted about this already…I blame my poor thread researching skills).
