This is just a short fan made demo. Don't know if this was pitched to the studios or not but obviously the BR set doesn't have any new effects.

Of course if Lucas would have done this with Star Wars we would have screamed bloody murder.

If Lucas had done this, there would be 10 times the amount of clutter on screen.

I think this is really well done.

I know some are purists and think any change is sacrilegious. Others just don't like models being replaced with CGI. (I'm often in that camp) Or the updated effects are not needed.

I look at each property differently.

First off I think the originals should always be preserved and available.

Star Wars, other than cleaning up some matte lines didn't need its effects replaced or new ones added. It had many effects all custom made for each particular shot. Lucas actually took out really good shots and replaced them with inferior ones.

Star Trek and BSG TOS in my opinion do benefit from an upgrade. The optical effects fine for its time looked decent on small low resolution screens. However they look awful today. Other than a few sellect episodes the same five shots or so were retread for every episode. The effects lacked diversity. So new shots with more interesting choreography and camera work is an improvement.

Lost In Space on the other hand had in camera shots which avoided the whole horrendous matte lines issues and hold up quite well. Redoing those special effects aren't really necessary. Heck I'm still not sure which shots of the Chariot are the full scale vehicle and which ones are the model!

No respect for the artistry of John Dykstra then. BSG looked revolutionary for its day

Nothing to do with respect. But it was more a time and budget issue. No disrespect to the artist. (Slightly edited my post)

The firewall here at work blocks video. My first chance to see this will be at home on Saturday night. So it's a little frustrating.

That's absord. If all Lucas had done was update some mediocre or bad special effects, there'd be some bustle from the fanbase, but almost no bloody murder screaming. Lucas is decried by fans who made him what he is today, because of other things he did to the original trilogy, including but not limited to:
  • Adding unecessary additional ships and animals into scenes, cluttering them (at one point even blocking the camera for a few seconds), for no other reason than he can now and can't stand scenes that aren't "busy".
  • Changing it so Solo didn't shoot first, later claiming that's how it was originally shot but the camera angle didn't make it apparent. Whether true or not, you don't change one of FEW character development scenes for Solo over two decades later.
  • Adding annoying "NNNOOOOO!!!" yells from Vader.
  • Changing the screams of the Sand people to this echoy cartoonish crap.
  • Retconing in prequel characters
  • Do a number of stupid and pointless changes that aren't the mark of a man who waited decades for technology to allow him to do what he originally intended, but rather allow technology to allow a oddball obssessive to needlessly tinker in minutia.
  • And then have the nerve to tell fans he would never release the original unaltered films on DVD.

Off the top of my head.

There's a lot ot be said about older film and television works. Sure the special effects may be bad or even barely adequate, but that's part of the joy and freshness of watching them. I don't want to go back into everything and see special effects that looks like every other piss-poor CGI effect I can see today. I'm fucking tired of CGI space ships.

It would be one thing to fix a scene with good CGI because the original was so poorly made it was a joke (other other problems like bad coloration, missing lights and layovers, bad green screen, etc.) but it's entirely another to just trash them, completely redo them in bad CGI, and even greatly alter how the scene(s) even play out. A delicate informed and sensible approach is always needed, though so many in Hollywood seem to be unable to think this way.

In the end, Lucas is just strangly arrogant about what he's done and confused even though there are plent yof well thought out articles and videos that address the complaints of fans. Yet he just seems to ignore us. The Force is not with him.

Well, I finally saw the clip and think it's fantastic. Very exciting and well-done.
