Anyone who can possibly be in Palm Springs, California on May 15 is urged to attend the annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival (May 14 - 17) for an early morning screening of 'They Won't Believe Me'. It's one of the best noirs ever made, rarely screened, and contains a central character unlike any seen in this genre! It is the Cinema Cafe's Hidden Gem #10 and has been previously reviewed (inspected) here: http://thecinemacafe.com/the-cinema-treasure-hunter/2013/6/22/wkph1bclcvl5jxi5844tpzri2fb3wk Information about the Festival can be found here: http://arthurlyonsfilmnoir.ning.com/

Great film! Are they showing the 95 minute original release? I have a 16mm print that was struck before the edited reissue. I was not aware that the uncut version was released on laser. Only the 80 minute reissue has been shown on television.

I saw it at a screening in Berkeley.

Don't miss Susan Hayward's excellent figure in her first moment onscreen! And her first words when she (later) sits down at the bar.

I don't know. I was not able to find any information on the festival link. Eddie (Dark City) Muller will reportedly be there so I would imagine it will be a longer cut of the film. If you notice in the comments section below my review (also linked) he does have some interesting information about the longer cut, but I'm sure he's referencing a 35mm print. Your 16mm version is, I'm certain, what was used for the laser disc.

Thanks for the thumbs up!

BTW - When RKO reissued their films in the fifties, one program began in 1954 and for those releases the films were not only edited but the main titles were completely re-photographed so that they were "1:85 safe". THEY WON'T BELIEVE ME is one of those for which the titles were re-done, as were THE LOST PATROL, STATION WEST, RACHEL AND THE STRANGER and many others. The lovely character introductions in the original titles of THE ENCHANTED COTTAGE were completely done away with. However, for THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, since the studio did not want to redo the special effects titles, they merely squeezed the titles, adding a soft border and black at the top and bottom of the frame.

Hi, Ray --

I imagine it was during the 1954 re-do that RACHEL's main title lost the Waldo Salt writer's credit? And, that this was the result of blacklisting?

(Has the ENCHANTED COTTAGE footage been restored?)

Off-topic note to PNJ:

Are you able to add something to this thread? It's stumping everybody. Thanks.

Regarding Salt, my guess would be yes. As for COTTAGE, yes the original release version is the one that was released on Turner Home Video tape and is shown on TCM. I've had three 16mm prints, all reissue prints. Boo hoo.

I also have a VERY rare uncut print of THE BIG SKY, as well as a production short which I put on youtube a few years back. Terrible transfer. I'm going to re-do it with my new Transvideo and re-post it. It's a lot of fun. Stay tuned.
