Hi

If anyone is a fan of Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999, perhaps they can help me.

A while ago I was watching a YouTube clip from the opening of a season 2 episode which featured a fabulous version of Derek Wadsworth's theme over a montage of Moonbase Alpha.

I have no idea which episode this was and I wasn't logged into my Youtube account so it doesn't show up on my history.

So any help would be appreciated.

Could it be one of the alternate themes Wadsworth wrote?

i Dont think so mate - I'm pretty sure it was an arrangement of the regular theme used for the secondary credit sequence, after the usual title scene.

It's really bugging me!

There is an arrangement of the main theme for the episode The Metamorph, just after the intro scene. Perhaps it's that?

Close but no cigar - it's a similar arrangement but the one im thinking of is a bit more vibrant (which isn't really the best term but it's the best I can think of).

I was going to mention The Metamorph cue- It's the only thing on the soundtrack CDs, at least, that comes close to your description (unless a bit of an Alternate Theme track was dropped into an ep).

I always thought Wadsworth's S2 main title was more fun and exciting than the show itself. Much like S2 LAND OF THE GIANTS (John Williams).

Yes, the only alternative arrangement of the theme music in the entire Year 2 series is the cue that accompanies the cast and crew credits at the start of The Metamorph episode (as the camera pans slowly over the Psychon planet - volcanoes erupting etc).

None of the alternate themes appeared in the screened episodes in any guise at all.

Derek Wadsworth's music was the best element of Year 2, although I never liked his theme as much as I did Barry Gray's. On the other hand, Wadsworth's Day After Tomorrow/ Into Infinity theme would have made a great Space: 1999 theme, IMO.

I don't know if any Wadsworth fans have noticed, but the rhythmic phrasing of his The Day After Tomorrow and Space 1999 themes are taken directly from the phrasing of the titles themselves - ie. you can sing the words "The Day After Tomorrow" and Space 1999 along with the music.

Very few film/TV composers have ever done this trick. I can think of Ronnie Hazelhurst's TV themes, and James Bernard.... DRAA-CULARRRR.

The 3 notes which announce THRILLER's title were conceived by Pete Rugolo using the word "the".

[the - THRILL - er]

He did mention this himself years ago at a Space: 1999 convention. He said he always had, at the back of his mind perhaps, the possibility that someone might put some words to it, although he added that he could barely imagine someone actually singing a song along those lines.... smile

Well, this morning I came up with words for Wadsworth's Space: 1999 theme.

I BLAME ALL OF YOU FOR MAKING MY BRAIN SPEND TIME ON THAT.

How 'bout this

Space nineteen-ninety-nine
We've got far far less money to spend this time
Space nineteen-ninety-nine
What has happened to Victor
To Paul and Kano gone one and all
The show's going to fall....

Ah fuck it.... smile

Joel Hirschhorn couldn't have done better. Possibly big grin
