Although this 6 CD set does not interest me, I applaud Varese in attempting a new direction.

However, I do wish Varese would release all those 30 minute Goldsmiths or license them to another venue.

I think this Varèse LIVE idea is a good one.
Varèse has been touting live performance for a while now.

The 6 disc set should leave off the reissues and focus on brand new recording with their new orchestra.
I'd rather have that than reissues.
Instead of the BTTF Trilogy disc reissue, make new suites of 80s Silvestri scores. He's got plenty of 80s gold to mine.
Same with John Barry! Skip the GOONIES reissue, record more suites of Grusin, Broughton, Goldsmith, Williams, Horner, etc!

That would be a better direction for this 6CD set.

Perhaps there wasn't enough time to do recordings ahead of their announcement date, or there wasn't time available at a scoring stage, enough musicians to book when a stage was available, or no suites yet exist for the music you mention (Grusin, Broughton), etc.

This 6CD set can now be purchased for $99.98, without the concert tickets included.

What is it with Varese's new fascination with cardboard sleeves? Bleurgh.

I think it started when they hired the kid from Bad Santa, who, if you'll remember, was obsessed with Advent calendars.

Ooh, that's how they should have done the LP to CD series....a 12 month advent calendar. Sold!

The sleeves work in that type of presentation. Maybe they are looking to present the music in a new way. There is more to packaging this stuff than the usual methods. Creative presentations are interesting and welcome in my book.

I'm surprised they aren't releasing the 1985 CD by itself instead of forcing to get the whole set of other CDs many of us already have.

It’s probably because they'd have to charge $99 whether it's a single CD or 6, just to recoup the costs of that recording session. We tend to forget that it isn't CD sales that allow the stellar recordings we're spoiled by to exist, but rather the film's initial budget. Even top composers don't have the money to do more than one or two vanity projects. Ever. Film music as we know it wouldn’t exist if it was based on sales.

l just got it, this week and I love it!
Ok I appreciate some of the negative comments, and there was one disc I already had and also one I absolutely did not want (the songs) but overall it's a large and beautiful package and very much worth it. The incredible artwork would be wasted in a small jewel case...

I got this too, using the discount available to LP-to-CD subscribers. I have only listened to most of the first disc with the Varese Sarabande Orchestra, but found that quite enjoyable. And I'll even give the pop song disc a spin some day soon.

Ordered it with same discount. Totally worth it at discounted price.

Question for anybody who got this CD:

Is the Goonies CD indeed missing all the Bonus tracks or is this just a typo?
